What exactly is the Groom's Cake and when do you use it. Does the Groom know about it, or is it a surprise? All these and more questions to come

Mine is a surprise! It is a fisherman fishing off of a jetty with the water beneath him and fishies. I am serving it at the wedding but most people do this at the rehearsal dinner. Ilona from Sugar Sugar is making it for me. She is wonderful!

I think Groom's cakes were more popular years ago...and they used to have them at the wedding.
These days...I see more and more girls having Groom's cakes at their rehearsal dinners...and I think most times they are surprises...and the girls like to have them shaped into things their FHs like...like the poker cake we just recently saw...I've seen footballs...stadiums...cars...etc.

I think I want to do one for the rehersal dinner. FH is putting up with me making decisions and I'm even getting away with a Cinderella 'theme' (not really too in depth, but still Cinderella aspects) and I feel like he deserves somehting just for him. I havent' decided what its going to be yet. He loves ice cream cake but I dont know if I can get a really creative one. I want something really cool having to do with his personality and his hobbies.

We had our Groom's Cake at the RD. DH knew he was getting a cake, but didn't know anything more than that. DH went to VA Tech and is a big Hokie fan, so here is the cake I got him:

I just ordered my groom's cake on Saturday. FH is a landscaper so I went to the Toro website and printed out a pic of the mower he uses and they are going to scan the pick onto the cake (its a rainbow cookie cake...his fav) and we're going to put a catchy little phrase under it like 'you mow me over' or something like that.
I am giving it to him at the wedding as a surprise - I can't wait to see the look on his face!
