My fiance has always wanted to change his last name to his grandmother's maiden name. (His brother and his mother have already changed theirs.) When I met him, I told him I loved his (current) last name, so he kind of let it go for a while.
There is no ill will with his last name, he is close with his father and his father's family, but there are other reasons why he wants to change it.
-Have any of you ever experienced this or know of anyone who has? Can you give me any advice?
I just think it will be weird to say my vows to him with his new last name. I know he's not changing, but it's so weird to me.

Re: Groom's name change question
Yes....my uncle changed his first AND last name.
It was Walter G Now it is Jason H
His first name was my grandfather's first name, and he didn't get along with him...so my grandmother helped change it to Jason...and his last name is what his grandmother's name was (on his mom's side).
No one thinks of him as Walter G anymore...he is Uncle Jason to us and to his whole family...
good luck!!

Re: Groom's name change question
Yes it will be weird to get used to him with this new name. However, are you marrying him for his name or for himself. Think of how long it takes everyone to get used to calling a bride by her new name. My friend has been married for 3 years and to this day I can not break my habit of calling her job and asking for Krista maiden name...not krista married name. So if he really wants to change it, I would just go with the flow!!! He's still the same guy either way!!!

Re: Groom's name change question
Actually, my sister's husband changed his last name shortly before they were married. He switched to his mother's maiden name b/c he did not have a relationship with his father. My sister didn't want to get stuck with his father's name either. She took his 'new last name'.
It was really, really easy and there is no need to hire a lawyer. A couple of lawyers that he spoke to wanted to charge him around $1000!!!!! That's nonsense! We did it ourselves.
To the best of my recollection this is how it works: 1. He just has to go down to the county courthouse (in Nassau or Suffolk, depending on where he lives) and speak to the clerk about filing a petition for a name change. 2.After he finishes it, which you can do there or at home, he has to pay a filing fee (around $180). 3.He also has to speak to the judge at a later date. He has to tell the judge why he wants to change his name. This can be for any reason as long as its not to avoid creditors. 4.He also has to post the petition for a name change in the local paper (this is easier and cheaper than it sounds as ppl do it all the time and the papers already have samples prepared).
It does take awhile ( a couple of months). He should get started on it asap if he does want to change it. Good Luck!

I can understand it being wierd. I have heard of men doing this though. I know it takes a while with the petition though.
