Growing up is not easy...

Growing up is not easy...

Ok so FH and I decided that it was about time to downgrade our cars since we dont want to be 'that couple' that owns a BMW and a Lexus yet cant afford a place to live.

So yesterday FH turned in his truck and bought a new Nissan Sentra. The car is nice and has great gas mileage and will save him about $150 per month on car payments alone, but its no BMW. FH works in the city so its basically only a station car for him which means he will probably have to fill it up with gas like once a month which means we will save a ton of money!

Now im up next. I have to find a new car too. I kinda want a mini truck but not sure just yet. With gas prices going up I dunno if this is my best option. I have been looking into Murano's and the Rogue but will not do anything for a little bit since I havent found something i love yet. The Rogue's gas mileage is about the same as the car I have now.

I just cant believe I am at a place in my life where I am starting to care about someone else and our future together. Its soooo weird, but I know that when those car bills and insurance payments come in that it will definately be worth it. As FH says, 'Id rather have a beautiful house than have a beautiful car, and the X3 is not big enough for us to live in.'

Anyone else giving things up in their lives to save for the wedding or a house??

We were in this situation 2 years ago. We bought our house and really had to stop doing things because now we have such a huge responsibility with mortgage and all of our other bills. Now throwing a wedding on top of that has made it harder but we have adjusted.
To be honest FH and I really don't care the type of car we drive, just as long as it gets is to where we need to be. We love staying home and being lazy together and we go out on the weekends for dinner and a movie. Once you get comfortable you will realize that you wont feel like you are giving up stuff because you will be happy to have a house and a perfect wedding

Well, this is going to sound bratty but my first car my parents bought for me so it literally had every bell and whistle you could possibly wish for. I beat the **** out of that car in three short years - the bumpers were repulsive since I learned to drive (and park!) with that car.

Now that I bought my own car I was like, hmm... do I really need that feature? Funny thing though - the dealership screwed up and I wound up getting free leather, sunroof and upgraded rims. I'm sooooo super careful with my car now. I have never tapped another car while parking. My money spent = lots of care and love!

Thankfully Joe & I own a home already. Actually looking into a second home. But if so then I guess giving up a few things may happen too. As of right now, neither one of us drive lavish vehicles. I own a Jeep Liberty Limited & Joe also has a station car since he works in the city as well. A Toyota Camry he drives. We knew that certain things like a home that we can & will raise a family in makes us more happier than our ride. lol

i actually feel like we're having to downgrade a lot to ensure our future. i used to love to shop and now i won't even buy new clothes when i need them! we don't go out as much to shows and concerts, we don't take as many mini vacations, and when FH's car finally dies out in the near future he'll probably have to go for something more economical than the brand new car he had in mind. but still, we're enjoying our lives together - even the quiet days where we stay in to save money, and that's what counts! it's all worth it!

I guess it doesnt really matter what car we drive since once we buy a house, we will be so broke we will have to stay in anyway!!

I work for Nissan so I have to say- Good Choice!
when you're ready to go back to more luxury, look at the Infinitis, their not as much as a Lexus or BMW.

I get a car through work but FH is going to downgrade when we get married, he pays a ton now for his truck but when we get married he can come on my vehicle plan and we'll get him into a Sentra or something too.

I have seriously cut down on shopping-BIG time. We have made a pact to get married debt free which will take a lot of big payments and no extra debt so I'm trying as hard as I can!

Good idea it would be harder if you have a big debt. Im an accountant so money management is my game. Its very important to think about what is more important to you. Thats it in a nut shell. A beautiful home and a safe nice car (not extravagant) is all we need.

We're in the same place. I moved home from my adorable apartment to save on rent for a couple of months. I also I trying to not buy anything unless it is absolutely necessary. It is hard since I've always been comfortable with money and able to spend it as I please. It also makes me feel good in a way though. I only wish my FH was able to save as much as I am, because sometimes it feels like I am the only one making changes in my life for the sake of us as a couple.

we are in the same place too...we bought a condo last year, have a bagillion dollars in school loans and are teachers...SO....we don't go out much, shop the sales at the supermarkets and clip coupons...but we live together and love every second of it (well almost every second..) we figure if we are smart now, later on in life we can have the luxurious cars, houses, vacations etc...

In the long run you will be much happier having money to pay for your house and wedding. The Altima is a great car. My friend has it and she loves it.

I have an Altima. LOVE it!!!!!!

I have to say- I am in the same place. Luckily, FH and I have a house lined up for us and an apartment which we have to pay NO rent BUT we are still saving. I want my net worth to be HUGE. I don't even remember the last time I went shopping. We just save save save.

I dont feel like we have stopped doing anything that we use to so. We worked it out that we pay our bills and save for the wedding and a house. We have saved alot of money, the wedding is paid off and we have a 20% downpayment on a house and plus some. We r buying a house at the end of the summer and maybe then we will have to cut back. If we have to cut back... its ok. At least i'll have a house and a wedding.

omg i feel the same way! fh and i sat down last weekend and made a huge spreadsheet, and ive realized that i am going to have to downgrade as well. but its kind of exciting, b/c like you said, you are staring to care about someone other than yourself and your future.

I have a 07 Nissan Murano....I absolutely love my car...but I must say that $60 a week in gas in making it a bit tight and FH has a 2500 Diesel Truck that take $100 a week in gas - that's $640 a month in gas alone between the two of us...
so needless to say my next vehicle will be a car with better gas mileage.

Re: Growing up is not easy...

Luckily, FH and me are in a good spot financially. We're older, so we've already paid off all our student loans and have no credit card debt (whatever we charge we pay in full when the statement comes in each month). I only have 11 payments left on my car and he will be done with his car payments by the time the wedding comes around.

The only thing we are downsizing in life are our Mets season tickets. We've had them for 7 years and we're paying almost double what we started out and it's just not worth it anymore.
