Guardians

Does anyone know how I go about appointing legal guardians for Nicolas, in the event that anything were to happen to Patrick and me? This is something I've given a lot of thought to. I know who I would want to raise him, and I want to be *sure* that my wishes are carried out.

I believe you put it in your will, but you should consult a lawyer to be certain.

Yes, that goes in the will. The damage for a straightforward will isn't too bad-definitely less than a thousand.

My DH and I would be the legal guardians of our twin nieces should something happen to my BIL and SIL. They had their will written to reflect this and we were able to give our consent to this when they did this.

We still haven't written our will. It's definitely on our list of things to do in the new year!!!

Jen, this is something that you would have specifically identified in your living will.

I think what you are doing is GREAT!
This is a wonderful act of love for you son - one I hope he never realizes!

It is difficult to think about but so very important. Its like life insurance - something you never want to use but will be thankful you bought a policy if something happens.

My parents didn't have guardians for us - and then my mom became terminally ill with cancer when I was 3. She died 2 years later. Thankfully dad is still OK but if something had happened to him before she died, legally we would have been forced to be raised by people my parents never would have wanted.

My dad eventually designated guardians for us. It was in his will and they did sign consent forms.
