That's always a tricky situation - you will learn, as I will, that there is always going to be people who want to bring guests, kids, etc. It sounds as if you are trying to keep your count down limiting the 'and guest' to those engaged or in a serious relationship, which is perfectly understandable. I think your response was fine and maybe if you get three or four 'no's' you can allow the few people who ask to bring their guest. I wouldn't stress - it's always tough, you say yes to one, you have to say yes to all, never easy!!!

tell me about it. a long time friend has been with a guy since march. she thought since we're long time friends, she could bring the guy. i think she understands. when u pay per plate u need to cut corners somewhere

I would do what you did and make them wait a bit. First of all you sent your invites pretty early so that gives you alot of time to see how many people are coming before you make a decision. If you are getting less then expected then I would let them come.
Also since it seems they really ARENT in serious relationships it lets you get close to the date to see if they are even still together before making a decision.

Whatever you do, just be careful, what you do for one you have to do for all.

People will always think their situation is different and justifiable.

i agree. i could also talk to her sister to see if they're serious or how serious they are. i know fh would be afraid if 2 people, come, the gift would be like its for 1 person. i hope that doesn't sound selfish

I read somewhere that the bride shouldn't determine how serious the relationship is (meaning who is one person to decide how serious or not serious a particular relationship is) but rather if you are only doing engaged couples or couples living together than you stick with that as your basis-if you find out later you can invite more people then you could make the decision to allow them to bring a guest-but like the other ladies have said what you do for one you must do for all
