Hi all...this is my first post ...sorry its a vent.
Had my first ever positive pregnancy test last week (yippie!!!!!). Told my hubby in a special way and then it was time to call the Dr. When i called i was told about waiting till the 8th week for an appt. I know it was just a receptionist i was talking to but she was so cold. She wasn't quite as enthralled with my preganancy as i was. I had to ask about what foods i could eat, could i exercise, etc. I thought the first few weeks were crucial to the baby's development. She didn't even ask about any specific health issues (just an underactive thryoid but i heard that was supposed to be monitored closely throughout pregnancy). Only after my proding did she finally asked if i was taking prenatal vitamins. Am i crazy!!!! Did this freak anyone else out? Cried to poor hubby.

Re: Had my first break down in tears
Sorry you had a bad experience. Congrats on your pregnancy!!! Your body could take care of the growing baby before your appointment. You can get some over the counter prenatals. You can excercise your regular routine. You should avoid tuna (steaks), swordfish, raw fish, soft cheeses. If you have any questions just ask them here, we are here to help.

Re: Had my first break down in tears
It is very shocking the first time that you call all excited and their excitments doesn't match yours! I know I was pissed too. But you have to remember they see this everyday you don't.
They usually do not have you in because there is nothing really for you to see or do. It is too early for a sonogram, it is too early to hear the heartbeat. All they can do is confirm your pregnancy. If you have any questions, do not be afraid to call and ask the nurse. That is what they are there for!!!!
I have an underactive Thyroid also. You have to continue on your synthroid everyday, just like normal VERY IMPORTANT!! Also see your endocrinologist as soon as you can. Your OB-GYN is not the one that should be monitoring your thyroid.
Congratulations and best wishes for a healthy and happy 9 months!!!!

Re: Had my first break down in tears
Congrats on your positive pregnancy test!!!!! I am sure you are very excited!!!! I have to say I had a very similar experience to you. I remember calling from my cell phone on the street because I didn't want to call from my office (didn't want anyone to hear) and the dr's office was so cold - I just started crying on the street. She said we do not see you until you miss 2 periods unless you would like to terminate your pregnancy. I was like no way - but shouldn't I talk to the dr about what I should be doing and the nurse goes - just continuing doing what you are doing and living you life. They didn't even ask about prenatals - which I wasn't taking - just regular vitamins per my dr while I was TTC. I didn't get my first appt until 9.5 weeks - it was a long wait. But within a week or two I had so many pregnancy symptoms it all became so much more real and more happy!!!
I can relate. But per the dr - there is not much for them to see at this time and the heartbeat is ready to see until later on 8 or 9 weeks or so.
Go on the internet do some research and be happy - it will go fast.

Re: Had my first break down in tears
I personally think that is rude and uncalled for. When you go to the doctor, I would say something...I understand they are busy, etc. but there is no reason to be rude and cold when you have a million questions!
I hope they treat you better (you too Niecey)!!!
Congrats on your PG!!!

Re: Had my first break down in tears
When I called my Dr. they had me come in that week(I was like 4 weeks) they took blood and checked to make sure I was prego. Also had me talk to the nurse practioner about what I should and shouldn't be doing. If you aren't happy I would get another OBGYN and fast

Re: Had my first break down in tears
my dr did the same exact thing, I insisted on a blood test even though the recep said that it was out of the ordinary. Im soory but I would like to confrim things! They were very rude to me on the phone like this was my 60th pregnancy or something!

Re: Had my first break down in tears
I went through the same thing- My Dr. didn't want to see me for 8 weeks, so they could hear/see the heartbeat - they did however call me in a prescription for my pre-natals, and the receptionist was very pleasant - So while not seeing you right away is normal, the attitude of the receptionist is not!!!

Re: Had my first break down in tears
Sorry you were not treated as you had expected. I took GNC pre-natal vitamins my entire pregnancy and had no problems. They were great.
I would not do stomach crunches or anything like that..but a regular exercise program is very good for you at this time.
If you feel that you want to see a doctor sooner IMO, call and say that you want to see the doctor. period. It is totally your right to do so!
And something I wish I had known during my pregnancy you can actually switch doctors at ANY time...even towards the end! Never forgot that.
