Had my HSG

Had my HSG

I had my HSG done yesterday. For those of you that don't know this is a procedure done to see if your tubes are blocked.

It wasn't fun but not too bad. My good friend that has gone through all of this infertility stuff too went with me. She drove me and my DH met me at the hospital. He wasn't there yet when they took me in to the room. I was laying on this table and there were three docs in the room and a tech behind the glass. UGH!! I thought they were having a party in there!! I was getting really nervous and I heard another voice and saw this face standing over me and then I realized it was my DH
I was so glad to see him and he held my hand during the procedure.

They insert a speculum and clean your cervix with some iodine. Then they insert a catheter and inject dye into your reproductive tract. Then they put an x-ray machine over you and you can see the dye going through your body. Really weird. The whole thing was uncomfortable but then I started cramping.

One tube was great -- the other was either blocked or in spasm b/c the dye wouldn't go through. They said since my one tube was good that most likely (85%) the other tube is just fine. So we will try IUI next cycle.

But when I left I felt horrible. I could hardly walk. It was like very very strong/bad mestral cramps. UGH! But luckily about 1/2 hour later I was feeling much better. I probably had such bad cramps b/c of the spasms.

Anyway - thought I would share. I feel like I'm finally on the path to getting somewhere with all of this infertility stuff. If any ladies are having this done and have questions please feel free to FM me.

Thanks!

Baby dust to all!!!!

I'm glad it went well for you. I'm going for one in the next two weeks so I'm glad to hear first hand what it was like.

If all goes well with my test we'll be doing IUI next cycle also.

Thanks ladies!!

Good luck with your procedure Karen! I'll be thinking about you and sending you good vibes!

It really helped me to have a friend that has been through this -- so I'm more than happy to share it with you ladies as well.

It's always a little scary going into the unknown and having strangers getting in your personal space. Just keep breathing. I took a lot of deep breaths and that helped.

Also another suggestion: ask about taking something prior to the procedure. I took some valium to try and calm my nerves and took some pain medication immediately following to alleviate the cramps as much as possible. Many people don't really feel anything -- so it's not always painful.

Thanks!!

How long did the procedure take in total? I don't think I'll need to take anything, I have a very high pain threshold. I don't even use novicaine at the dentist lol.

I just hate having all those people stare at me while I'm spread eagle

Which hospital did you go too? I'll be going to StonyBrook most likely.

Re: Had my HSG

Hi ladies,

Sorry I haven't read the posts in a few days.

The procedure was very quick. Only about 10 minutes.

I live in NC so I had the procedure done down here. But my mom works at Stony Brook and she had one there as well I think and I think you'll be in good hands there.

I hope you don't need to take anything. I hate taking meds myself. I think I would have been fine not taking the meds if I knew the cramps were going to go away in about 1/2 hour.

GOOD LUCK -- FM if you have more questions.
