Had to share (Charity related, good deed)
Sorry I had to share. No Im not bragging but some stuff gets to me ya know? Deep inside my tiny little heart. Maybe this belongs on the Charity Board, I don’t care I wanted to share.
Ok so most of you know I work with a Charity called Sanctuary for Families. It’s a shelter for women and children who’ve had it rough (abusive fathers and such). I am also involved in a professional association (NAIW) and I chair a few committees, one is Charities.
So for November we are having our monthly meeting become a semi-party. We have a silent auction with all sorts of really nice stuff, football tickets, golf outings, spa treatments, jewelry, dinners in the city. We are also using November to put up a small Xmas tree with ornaments for our Charity to help those in need this Christmas.
I asked the Sanctuary to provide 3X5 cards with names & ages and short description of what our members could buy. We set the limit to $40. Well I got my cards yesterday and I (yeah, ME) was nearly brought to tears! Shocking I know. They have small children in this shelter and women seeking protection. I got cards with bad handwriting of a small child who was writing to Santa. “Dear Santa, I’d really love to have some pots & pans for my mommy to cook on, she needs them. Oh and if its ok can I have a doll, too?, Thanks” Other stuff like that was killing me. Can I have a basketball and such. One of the cutest was a little girl asking for a ‘fully equipped” doctors bag to take care of her dolls with. The women mostly asked for warm blankets, comforters, pots, pans, towels or just gift certificates to Target & Kmart.
Man this stuff tears me up. To see a little kid asking for such simple things..
Whatever.. Again, I hope all of our own marriages are happy and healthy. It’s tough to worry about which favors to choose when I see these women and children whose husbands and fathers have forced them to this positions. One of my best friends who died on 9/11 survived an abusive husband and married a wonderful man as her second husband. Her two sons were from her first husband and I remember how happy they were to be in a loving home. She was big on helping out Battered Women. I know she would want me to continue her work.
Im just proud to know some of us out in this world (and even on this board, you’re a sweetie and I thank you again, you know who you are) who try to give a little back.
Ok, off my soap box.
