Apparently I was kidding myself. Any suggestions for anywhere similar (is that possible?) that might have lower airfare?

try flying in to London and taking an inter-Europe flight in to Italy. Sounds crazy but it is much less expensive. Most of those flights are under $70 bucks!

Summer travel to Europe can be pricy! I lived in Ireland for a summer and the prices were out of the world for flying!

Try a september date instead of going right after your wedding instead. Try oribtiz.com or travelocity.com - or see a TA who may be able to find you a deal!

If you're willing to wait a few months i know for a fact that the airfare for Italy goes down substantially during the fall months

If you fly Alitalia, the fares to Italy drop usually after the 2 weekend of September. Would you be able to go then?

ETA: How are you doing???

Have you tried EuroflyUsa?

They only fly to Italy and their prices are supposed to be pretty good. Don't give up on Italy yet! You should be able to find something. What is your budget?

Very true.

August is the prime travel season in Europe. A lot of people take the whole month off!

This is what fh and I are doing and it's saving us about $1000 in airfare.

or try flying into frankfurt. that is a main european hub. the main airport is Frankfurt am Main (pronounced mine) and then either getting a cheap flight out of Hahn airport, thru ryan air. Hahn is a bit of a distance, but german transport is excellant, so long as it isnt a sunday...

or try flying into any major european city. some airlines offer great deals...

also i would consider waiting until september. most of italy and europe for that matter, is on holiday for the month of august.

here is a list of cheap airlines in europe:

http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/

http://www21.germanwings.com/

http://www.easyjet.com/

also, how important is it to you to have a really nice hotel? i know it is your honeymoon and all, but some hostels have your own private rooms, and they can be really nice and cheap. even some hotels can be really nice and cheap. if you are doing a lot of sightseeing, cheap rooms are worth it, b/c you are out most of the day anyway.

if you have any questions feel free to FM me, i lived in europe for a year and did lots of cheap travel.

Sorry I would not fly Alitalia even if my life was depending on it!!!

Worst airline I ever used. And not because of service. They just believe in duck date repair.

They are those 2nd grade class airlines that buy retired planes from bigger airlines. The problem is that they are notorious (found out after my trip) that they do not have a good maintenance record on their plane. In another word, they don't maintain their planes unless there is a problem.

I thought I was going to die that day! Really!

Wow, thanks for all the responses! We are only able to go on the honeymoon right after the wedding, so like 8/27 or 8/28-9/9 or 9/10. My mom actually offered up frequent flier miles but there weren't any flights available. She is so nice and just told me she called and spoke to someone who said we might be able to fly to London and then get a connecting flight to Italy with miles so we have to look into that. Otherwise it is over $1,000 per person for ECONOMY class. Yikes! Maybe that is totally normal but I am a pretty cheap person so it kills me to spend so much just to get there. I told myself I wouldn't cheap out too much, it is my honeymoon after all, but I would rather shell out the extra money once I am actually there. I will look into all of your suggestions- you guys are great!

Not flying directly always saves $$.

Also, never fly Lufthansa if you can avoid it. The always manage to not transfer lugauge to your connecting flight and you have to wait for the next flight to come in from your connecting airport in order to get your lugauge.

We are saving about $2000 by doing this.

We are using AerLingus and flying thru Dublin, and then onto Rome. It's soooo much cheaper than flying direct thru AirItalia
