I have just started looking into hair and makeup and, as expected, it is a bit pricey, and since my wedding is all the way in Setauket, a lot of the companies are asking for 5 people minimum My question is whether or not I am expected to pay for my bridesmaids hair and makeup or are they expected to pay? Or do I offer them the option of getting it done and let them know what the price is? I am not sure what is customary or not?

you do not have to pay for them although that is a very nice gesture (out of my budget I have 7 girls), when I was a BM I was always told this is where we are going and this is how much it will cost. What I am going to do is pick my person and let the girls know the price and if they want to go somewhere else that is fine....I DONT WANT TO BREAK ANYONES BANK FOR HAIR/MAKEUP

It's hard b/c I know my girls would not have gotten their hair and makeup done if I offered it to them since they have no money. SO I knew I wasn't going to reach my minimums so I decided to offer to pay for their hair and gave them the option for makeup.
It's really up to what you can afford. I really couldn't afford this but I wanted to be nice... now I am even more over budget. Yikes!

Well it sounds like you are interesting in helping to pay (which I never had before and is super nice) why don't you go with individuals instead of a company/salon? i would think it would be cheaper.. or for your girls find someone who is very good at makeup but doesn't do it as a side job..
