My hair is thinning very badly on one side. My thyroid is fine, I think it might have something to do with my birth control pill, but the gyno made very light of it. I'm going to the endocrinologist soon. I am using biotin vitamin suppliments and biotin shampoos and cremes which are supposedly good for hair growth and will buy Nioxin shampoo soon which is supposedly very good also.
However, if it gets really, really bad, what do you gals think... extensions? Clip ins?

Re: Hair Loss Solutions?
I had my hair falling out in clumps due to a reaction to a drug I was taking, but it can also be attributed to stress. How long have you been noticing hair loss?
I had noticed my hair getting thin at one point and my hair dresser told me to do 3 things:
1. take the hair skin and nails vitamins which contain biotin 2. brush your hair with a brush every day for 5 minutes or so.. or every now and then massage your scalp with your hands.. brushing your hair is supposed to stimulate hair production. 3.use this product.. she sold it to me but she moved away since.. amazon sells it from time to time
I just started Nioxin yesterday in three steps. I noticed a lot of hair in the drain afterwards, more than double the usual. However, I hear it isn't uncommon to lose more hair initially. It stimulates circulation to the hair folicle and it can loosen the hair. I am hoping for the best, but will probably use clip on extensions for the wedding anyway. My hair isn't so bad yet, but I am trying to prevent more loss. Someone suggested taking pre-natal vitamins, using Baby shampoo or even use the WEN product. Good Luck. Please let me know if anything works for you.

Re: Hair Loss Solutions?
A friend has this problem as well. She was diagnosed with PCOS as a reason for it.
Hair loss can be due to multiple things.
She had a professional wig... really clip in extensions made. it was pricey but its real hair and it looks very natural.
another friend of mine has Alecia... and she uses jessica simpson hair extensions.

I started loosing large amount of hair also. Mine was due to pregnancy but my hair dresser told me to get the nioxin line and it worked wonders. I used the entire line including the daily gels. She also told me to massage my scalp daily to stimulate the roots and dont pull your hair back in ponytails

Re: Hair Loss Solutions?
Take some Biotin (at least 5000mcg) or a Hair Skin and Nails vitamin (make sure it contains Vit A, horsetail extract and collagen).
Good luck!

Re: Hair Loss Solutions?
I have Alopecia (just means thinning hair or hair loss). They were never able to figure out what EXACTLY causes it. I know that my birth control pill doesn't help, and 1 of the side effects is hair loss.I tried Rogaine and didn't have much success, I also found that once you stop using the Rogaine you start losing just as fast and I wasn't about to sign on to a lifetime of Rogaine usage.
I was taking a whole bunch of vitamins, but feel that Biotin on its' own works best. It doesn't do wonders for my hair, but my nails are awesome!
I haven't heard of the Nioxin, I am going to look into that.
As for the wedding, I am getting the extensions. They are going to bobby pin them in for that day and then after the wedding they are going to sew the clips on so that I can put them in and out on my own.
I have seen some great and some not so great dermatologists and have tried so many different things for hair loss. It becomes my obsession at times! So if you need suggestions or want to vent FM me!
On another note, if someone has a good endocrinologist that they recommend I would appreciate it!

Re: Hair Loss Solutions?
There are many causes of hair loss and I doubt the endocrinologist will be able to help. I would recc seeing a dermatologist. Preferably one who is familiar with hair loss because many of them have no idea how to treat it. Ted Daly in Garden City NY has experience is this area and I highly recommend him. 227-3377 ( yes I work here...)

Re: Hair Loss Solutions?
I've been to my regular internist, he checked for a thyroid problem, but everything was normal and he made very light of my hair thinning. I went to the gyno and told her I wanted to switch BC pills because of my hair thinning and she also made very light of the hair thinning and of it being related to birth control, but I've read online from people that this is a side effect, even though the majority doubts it. Next, I'm on to the endocrinologist and the dermatologist after that. It's possible I could have PCOS.
I'm literally waking up every week with a new little balding area on my left side.
Anyone have a good dermatologist in SI?

Re: Hair Loss Solutions?
about 5 years ago my hair starting falling out in big chunks. i went to all possible doctors. Had numerous tests. At that point my doc linked it to diets I was doing and significant weight loss (I lost about 40lbs). I tried to get to a normal healthy weight. I started eating very healthy, lots of vegies and fruits, taking vitamins and reduce stress to minimum. I wish you good luck. Hope you find a solution fast.
