So I'm cancelling my wedding at the Watermill because it's just costing too much. It had gotten to the point where I was gonna have to skip out on my honeymoon. FH and I sat down and reestablished our priorities and decided that with the cost of housing going down, that we should focus our funds on a house rather than on a party. So we're gonna be doing a destination wedding instead at Sandals' Royal Bahamian resort in the Bahamas and we're so excited!!! The only thing is that now I have to cancel my hall. We've given them $3000 so far and I want to get as much of it back as possible. I keep hearing that there's a law in suffolk county saying that a hall cannot keep all of your money, but I don't know the specifics of it and can't really find it anywhere. I'd like to be armed with that info in case my hall gives me any crap. Does anyone know where I can find info on it?
Anyways, the best part is that we get to move up our wedding to next july rather than waiting until october!!!! I can't wait to get everything booked!

Re: Hall cancellation
You shouldn't have a problem. Watermill has plenty of time to rebook your date! Don't sweat it! I don't know the legality of it, try posting on BHB or do a search - I know it's been discussed before.
I'm sure your decision was tough, congrats to you both! (FH and I want to HM at Sandals Royal Bahamian)! Good luck!

Re: Hall cancellation
I think you are making a smart choice!!! My sister is getting married next week at grand bahamian in bahamas, i will let you know how it is. I know she is paying around 6000 for everything including photo and video. and the wedding package.
Housing has come down so much and that is the best thing to try to get into a house first!!!

Re: Hall cancellation
there is a suffolk law that states if you cancel 6 months or more before the event you are entitled to all of your deposit back less 100.00. It helped me when I cancelled my first hall. Let me see if I can find it for you.

Sounds like you're making a good decision. A destination/beach wedding sounds sooooo ideal sometimes. Happy planning! And good luck on the search for a house! (don't you feel like such a grown-up when you talk about buying a house? It's so weird, right?)

I know!!! It's so weird! At heart, I'm still a toys r us kid, but in reality, it's time to grow up. I can't wait to buy a house and jump on a big bed (still sleeping in a twin) without my parents yelling at me to stop that before I break my head.

Re: Hall cancellation
You are entitled to your money back as long as you cancel 6 months before the date of the affair. Don't let them bully you around about it, but check your contract, that you didn't sign anything that said you would agree to other terms. My friend just cancelled her at Giorgio's and they had to give her all of her money back and her wedding is in December of this year. You also lucky it is in Suffolk because I belive that Nassau has a different law....

yup so true. i had to cancel my orginal hall- it was within the 6 month mark - at first they told me i had to pay a booking fee of $500- but i read about the law & the contract i had- so i ended up getting all my money back!!

Re: Hall cancellation
yes absolutely...write a formalletter of cancellation. Even if its in your contract they can't contradict the law. Good luck!!! I think your making an excellent choice. Plus your wedding sounds like its going to be beautiful...GOOD LUCK!!!
