I cancelled my original hall and I'm having a hard tome getting my $500 deposit back even though they rebooked the room for my date. They want to give me a credit for the amount rather than the $$.
I don't want to name which hall it is until this is resolved, because they have been very great to deal with and accomodating otherwise.
Before I really start agruging for my money back, I want to find out if the credit is what most halls give in this situation. Do you know what your hall's policy on this is.
Thanks!

Re: Hall Deposit ?
It has been my experience that most halls not only do not have to give back your deposit, but they can even request a percentage of the original cost. Check your contract to see what is specified.

I'm sorry to say that I agree. Check your contract.

make a fuss...telling them you will post this on LIW...

Re: Hall Deposit ?
I know at the hall I booked at, we gave them a 1000 deposit, and if we canceled before 6 months prior to the wedding we only lost 100 dollars.

Re: Hall Deposit ?
my brother ran into the same thing, he left a deposit for $500 for a catering hall that I rather not mention... okay I'm over it, it was Villa Lombardi's and it turned out that the date they selected was good. They said if the date gets rebooked they would return all, but $100 - I think they refer to it as processing/paper work.
Read your contract carefully. Don't let them keep you $$, you're going to need every dime for other stuff.

Re: Hall Deposit ?
I know my contract stated that no matter what we would lose the 500 deposit if we changed our minds...paying after that is different..for the affair, they always give a certain percentage back but not the deposit.

Re: Hall Deposit ?
Definatly read your contract.
I just read mine (I am not cancelling but was curious) and my hall has the right to retain all monies paid on account, to date of cancellation as and for damages or may elect to return all or part of such monies as it, in its sole discreating may determine.
Definatly read your contract

Re: Hall Deposit ?
My contract says if they re book you get it back minus a 10% fee & the value of the rebooking has to be greater.

Re:'Hall'Deposit'?
I had to leave a $500 deposit and if we had to cancel we would not get that back no matter what unless we cancelled within a couple of days of signing the contract.

Re: Hall Deposit ?
I don't know if the hall is in Suffolk County, but there is a law in Suffolk esspecially for this situation(my mother is battling our 1st hall in SCC right now!). Basically it says something along the line of that if the hall has enough time to rebook(it may say 6 months, not sure) they can only keep $250 & any monies they may have already spent directly towards your wedding(which could possibly include the banquet managers commision, on certain cases). Apparently Suffolk came up with it because of problems lots of people have had getting deposits back from catering halls. We found all this out when we were hunting for a new hall in January. The owner of The Miller Place Inn told us about it & gave us a copy of the law(on a side note, they were booked for the date I wanted, but they are the nicest people!)

Re: Hall Deposit ?
Thanks for your help. I was only booked there for 1 month and when I cancelled they still had a whole year to rebook the room. At that time I was more concerned with getting out of the contract so I could book somewhere else, so I wasn't too concerned with getting the deposit back.
The contract says the the money for down payments can be retained by the caterer, but when I was cancelling the banquet manager I was dealing with at the time verbally (I now know I should have got it in writing) told me that if the room was rebooked with the same guarentee I could get my money back.
Now the manager changed the story. If I had paid my deposit on a credit card, they could credit my account, but since I paid with a check the can only give me credit for thier halls/restaurants.
Also the guy is not calling me back when I leave messages and is completely avoiding me. When I was booking the place they returned my calls with in 1/2 hour. So I am getting very annoyed.

Re: Hall Deposit ?
I too was gonna suggest using the deposit for your RD, just so you won't lose it. Just a thought.
Unfortunately, most halls do exactly what this 1 is doing to you. Mines will keep a percentage depending on how much time is left prior to the date I booked them for.
I hope you're able to work something out, it sux that these halls (as well as MANY other types of vendors) can get away with stuff like this.

Re: Hall Deposit ?
Our hall stated when we signed the contract that we would get back whatever we paid except for $500. He also said that is usually a standard for a cancellation in any hall, depending how far in advance you are cancelling. They keep it for a booking fee.

Re: Hall Deposit ?
I was told that as long as someone else books for your day you will get a certian amount back. Considering how much in advance that you cancel

Re: Hall Deposit ?
Thanks for all of your help. I talked with the banquet manager and they are giving me $250 back in cash and $250 credit, which I was happy with. The hall owns a few restaurants also, so we'll go out to eat a few times and the credit won't go to waste.
