Halloween Donations ( for those of you with children)
My son Aidan will be 20 months old by Halloween, and I planned to dress him up and take him trick or treating. However I don't give him candy and even if I did I don't think he needs that much! So another Mom and myself have decided instead of candy we would like to trick or treat for donations for the Katrina relief fund. We contacted our local Red Cross and will be collecting donations on their behalf. We thought that it was a nice idea and we could teach our children to be charitable at a young age. Also when DS gets older and want's his candy, I would also like to continue collecting donations for charity too. If any of you are interested in doing this a well contact your local Red Cross or charity of your choice and they will give you all the info.

Wonderful Idea! I think that is great for you to do. And now the kids will learn at an early age to help other people

I'm not sure I understand...you will take him trick-or-treating, but instead of taking the candy, you will ask people to make a donation?

personally this would annoy me. wherever i go i get asked to make a donation and i have had enough already. i will do what i feel is necessary on my own time with my own resources, i don't need the reminder...
i would feel bad, but i would not give any more $$$ to children soliciting donations on halloween, hopefully other people are nicer

I think it is a great idea. Unicef used to do this regularly for Halloween and I remember getting loose change from a lot of elderly people when I was a kid, instead of candy.

No...I completely agree with you, which is why I asked. I would be annoyed if someone came to the door soliciting donations on Halloween in luie (sp?) of candy. I'm just not sure if that's what the intention of the original poster is....
PS. What are you doing here

I will feel a little weird about it, but it's for a great cause. My plan is to trick or treat a usual, but I will mention that we are also collecting donations like spare change and such. And if people say no, that's fine I will thank them and wish them a happy Halloween. I don't know what I'm going to do with the candy we get. My son can't have it (to young) and I'm on Atkins.

Personally...I would be annoyed if someone came to my door soliciting donations for this purpose...but maybe that's just me. If your son is too young for candy....why take him trick-or-treating in the first place? I don't get it

I don't get what's so hard to understand. It's a selfless act of charity. As for my son I don't feed him sugar, but it is still fun for him to dress up and see the other children. And I don't think you can start to early to teaching your children compassion and to be charitable. And if it would annoy you to give a nickle to help aid american families in desperate need then I guess I don't get that. But hey maybe you're just saving up for a pair of shoes or something. Anyway, I posted this for other mothers who may want to consider doing this with thier child. It sounds to me that you definetly do not have a child. I am sure that some people will not donate, as I said that is fine I wouldn't press anyone to do so. I will merely mention it if they say no that's fine. However for you to post saying how you don't understand it and adding justs seems nasty and childish. If you don't believe in teaching a child to help thier fellow man, fine you don't have to. But don't dare insult or mock me for trying to do the right thing with mine.

Whoa Nelly! First...I do have a child, she is 9 years old. We have already donated to the hurricane victims both at home and through the school collections, so forgive me for not wanted to be bombarded with stragers coming to my door asking for $$$ that they say is going to a good cause. While, I'm sure your intentions are genuine, that doesn't mean everyone's are and that all $$$ will actually go to a charity.
As for my rolling eyes...I added that because a child who is too young to understand Halloween and it not allowed to eat candy, seems silly to me to take trick-or-treating...so, why not take the $$$ you are going to spend on a costume for this child and donate it to your charity...rather than knocking on people's doors asking them too.
I wasn't trying to be nasty or start any trouble...you posted the thread, I just gave my opionion...which is what we are each entitled to.

I thought someone made a good point, how would you know if the person soliciting money was really going to give it to the cause? You might encounter some put off home owners, which is the only reason why I wouldn't do it. Also, Halloween is kinda far away, people might have already donated by then. I think it's a really genuine good deed though!

Re: Halloween Donations ( for those of you with children)
I am making his costume, not buying it. And dh and I have given everything that we can. My son is old enough to walk and run and play he will enjoy trick or treating he is also old enough to say please and thank you. And I think collecting spare change for the Red Cross is a wonderful idea. I'm sorry if I reacted harshly to your post , but it was like the third one saying 'I would be annoyed' The thing is I wasn't asking for advice on whether or not to do it, I was seeing if other Mom's might want to as well. And honestly the amount of negative posts shocks me. I really did not expect that. As I said I'm sure there will be plenty of people who react the same way that you and other poster's have. But I'm counting on a few good Samaritans still left in this world to donate. I don't expect to collect much maybe only $5 but it's better than nothing. I will be able to sleep with a clear conscience knowing that what I did for the Red Cross as well as my child was a generous act. And not only am I trying to instill good morals and values in my son, I'm trying to be a role model to him. I want him to grow up to be a compassionate, thoughtful, empathetic, loving, and appreciative person. You all may think that he's a little young for that but you can never start being a good person to soon. JMHO

I think it's a wonderful idea and I think the negativity you are receiving is awful. Good luck and you know what, if people don't want to donate then they don't have to.

I realize what you are trying to do...and it's a nice thing, but your original post was to share an idea so that other parents can do the same. Being a parent...I don't think it's a good idea, so I was just expressing that. Good luck

I agree as well...it is NEVER to early to teach your child to do a selfless act...there are too many kids today who are spoiled and get everything they want from Mommy and Daddy without evening saying 'please' or 'thank you'...and since when has there been an age limit for Halloween - to say that her son is to young for it if he doesn't understand why he's getting all that candy...is ridiuculous... if you don't want to donate - don' t simple as that

I remember doing this when I was a kid for unicef. They gave us little milk cartons to collect.
