I booked the hall first because I figured I would have more flexibility with the Church (being that they more than one time available per day) and some halls book up very fast. But you could do it either way.
Edited to address the first part of your question: It really depends on how many places you want to look at. I booked my hall within a couple of days of looking, but I pretty much had an idea of what I did and didn't want.

Re: Halls?
My FH wants get marrie this year in October. I feel like its going be very hard to book something this year. I rather wait next year but the problem with that is that my brother is going get married next May 2007.

Re: Halls?
you could always call your top vendor choices to see if they are available. If your side of the family has lots of out of town guests, I think it would be difficult having them travel for two weddings in the same year. If you want to try to get your date in 2006. Call some halls and photographers and find out if they have any dates available in the 1 or 2 months around the date you want, say October and November 2006.

Re: Halls?
I see your predicament. It's not impossible to book for October of this year, but you might not get your first choice of vendors and a Saturday night will be hard to come by. Afternoons or Friday and Sunday evenings will be a lot easier. I actually had to reschedule my wedding after everything was booked, so I basically started planning my November wedding in June and had very few problems with vendors. Good luck.

Re: Halls?
I am having a lot of difficulty booking a venue.
I think I've researched 200 halls.
The good ones are all booked super early. We are getting squeezed out til 2007. =(

Re: Halls?
I don't think it takes long to actually book the venue. You just need to have the deposit ready and sign a contract.
Picking the venue you want to book is the problem.

Re: Halls?
I booked the hall first then the church only because I wanted my catering hall so bad and I did not want to lose it so I booked it. And every place gives you 3 days for a refund anyway, so I called my church right away and locked in the date. If my church was not available for the date I would have either changed the date or picked a new catering hall within the 3 days they give you.
You can def find something for Oct. It may not be your first choice, but you can def do it. And we are all here to help you along the way!!!

Re: Halls?
I asked my Pastor for his available dates and went with that to the hall. Once I booked with them.....I made it official with my Pastor.

Re: Halls?
i'd shop halls & churches at the same time. FH and i are getting married at our hall, and we booked the hall quick, since we knew we'd have a long time to save money.
if your FH wants to get married in October--i'd say you should check out halls immediately!!! october, believe it or not, is a very popular month for weddings, because of the fall foliage, that makes for beautiful pics.

Re: Halls?
I at first was going to do the hall and then do the church but, my friend got me panic stricken that I should do the church first, sometimes they get really upset when you do the hall first.
If you are flexible with your hall and your date, I'd look to see what dates the church has available. It isn't too late to book for October, you just need to be flexible, and maybe consider November as well.
