hand addressing envelopes

hand addressing envelopes

I was told it is proper etiquette to have your invitations hand written in calligraphy instead of printing them out on the computer. Is this really true, and if so followed?

Re: hand addressing envelopes

Traditional ettiquette states that invitations should be hand written either caligraphy or pretty handwriting. Many brides today are printing them on their computer in a pretty script.

I personally, hand wrote all my invitations and I actually got a lot of people who complimented me on taking the time to write each and every one out (double envelope invites to!! )

I think this is a judgement call for each bride on what she wants to do.

ETA:
'Traditional etiquette says to “abbreviate nothing, hand address everything!” Writing out “Northwest Two Hundred Nineteenth Street” is tiring and could even delay the delivery of your invitation by a day or two. The United States Post Office would rather you write “NW 219th Street” and for you to use state abbreviations (“CA” instead of “California.”). Hand addressing certainly takes a lot of time, so this may be a good opportunity to get some of your friends and family involved with helping out, IF they have nice handwriting!'

No way, that is crazy! I just sent my invitations out yesterday and I had no time write them out! Maybe it is 'proper' but who cares. I printed mine out on clear labels in pretty font and they came out wonderful AND took no time at all. IMO it is a waste of time and money to hand write them (unless you have time and money to spare of course!)

If that's true then my etiquette is far from proper

I found a very nice font and printed the addresses out on clear labels. Or I know a lot of people printed it directly on the envelope (I tried, but the metallic envelope kept jamming in the printer)......Calligraphy didn't seem worth the $$ to me. I found a font that almost matched the invitation perfectly, and I think it looked really classy.

But it's really to each his own. In the end, people are ripping it open!

I am not sure if it is true, but I knew I needed to save money, so hand calligraphy was out.

I don't think its fair to say that it is crazy to handwrite them. I thought it was a nice personal detail and it really sisn't take that long. I've read that many brides on the board complained that it took a long time to hand feed each individual envelope in the printer. I dind't have the money for caligraphy so I did it myself.

I don't think its fair to say that what I did was a waste of time. You could have just said that it was something you chose not to do. JMO

I hand wrote all mine out. I used a white card and drew black magic marker lines. Measured equally between lines and stuck it in each envelope so that I could see it through the paper. Then printed very neatly everyones adddresses. Took me a whole sunday.

I hand wrote all of my invitations...took a day off of work to do it. I have nice handwriting though. I think that if i had poor handwriting i probably would have printed them on my computer.

i have terrible hand writing, so i'm probably going to print them up. i'm keeping my fingers crossed the envelopes will go through a printer. . .

I don't really have the extra money for the calligraphy and my handwriting is just awful.

I'll probably go the route of the pretty labels. Some calligraphy software gets very close to the real thing.

Best of luck in whatever route you choose.

Re: hand addressing envelopes

I would love to write all addressed but we have 100 invites...that is a lot of writing to do....so to save some stress, I'll have a calligrapher do it for me.

I love the idea of hand addressing envelopes. Especially if you have nice handwriting it just adds something special to the invitation. I was considering hand writing my addresses because I have pretty good handwriting, but for me it just would have taken too much time. So I used clear labels which turned out fine.

Traditionally, yes. Envelopes should be handwritten or hand calligraphy.

Computer calligraphy is pretty well accepted these days, though, and usually looks great!

The only thing I'd avoid is labels. Some people use them, but they're really NOT for invites at all.

I had hand calligraphy done by Michele Clark. Her work was gorgeous and her prices cheaper than most places doing computer calligraphy. FM me if you want her contact info.

Hi Date Twin!! I think that is just fine if you put your envelopes thru the computer! Of course, hand writing or calligraphy does add a personal touch but I think by using a pretty font and putting them thru the computer, it would look lovely! Good luck!
