Hand Cancelling???

Hand Cancelling???

I went to two post offices today (New Hyde Park and Great Neck) and was told that it does not matter if I hand cancel my invites --all the mail (except local) gets sent to Flushing where everything goes through the machine!

Does anyone know anything about this? I thought the whole point of hand cancelling was so that they didn't go through the machine...

Re: Hand Cancelling???

i thought that if you got your invites hand cancelled than they would not go through the machine --but the people at the post office said that is a big misconception --supposedly all the mail now has to go through a machine --it is all processed by machine in Flushing...

i am wondering why no one else has heard this too???

yes, when you cancel the postage --you stamp it with red ink so that no one can use the stamp again...but today i was told that they get put through the machine anyway and get that black barcode on the bottom of the envelope

While it's true that all mail (even hand cancelled mail) goes through a machine for the destination barcode, hand cancelling diminishes the chances of your envelope getting ruined because the envelope is run less often than regular mail. At the most, it would get run 2X (for the front bottom and back bottom) as opposed to over 4X regular...so if you have thick envelopes (like me), it's best to diminish your chances of ruining them.
