Is this necessary?

if you have bulky invitations like ones with rhinestones or bows, then yes. otherwise, prob not necessary.

nope. just makes the envelopes look a tiny bit nicer. but 100% not necessary.

I did because i used picture stamps and i didnt want them to run it thru the machine and print all over our faces!!

but i've heard that the invitations are actually stamped twice. so even if you do hand cancelling where you send them off at, it doesn't guarantee that it wont be stamped on again when it's received at the appropriate post office.

they are only stamped once and if you hand cancel them you will have to find a post office who will actually do this for you! during my last engagement, i had my invites hand canceled and i could only find one post office that would do it in queens and i had to go during the most dead time of the day and take a day off to do this!
i'm not planning on doing this this time around.

using regular stamps and addresssing the inner envelopes as well so they look neat.

I didn't have mine hand cancelled and from what I hear they all came in perfectly!!! I didn't have any embellishments like rhinestones or bows though. If you have them, you should probably try for hand cancelling anyway.
ETA: Also, I had black envelopes so you could hardly see the black post office stamp on them!

so you're putting your actual invitation inside of another envelope to avoid the stamping issue?

that's smart~
