I found out that the Middle Village post office on Metropolitan Ave will hand cancel my invitations and they were very nice about it. He said to come in towards the afternoon and they'll hand cancel a few at a time in between their regular work, and yes, all will go out the same day.
I usually go to the Maspeth post office on 69th St and they didn't seem to want to be bothered with hand cancelling. I did have 1 nice teller who helped me with weighing & stamps, but there's always someone else behind the counter there.
HTH!

They didnt give me a problem at my post office in East Elmhurst either. The woman saw me with the box of invites , called me over and handed the stamp to me to hand cancel myself. I was so relieved.

That's good! I wish I knew about hand canceling when I did my invites! I went to the post office in Glendale near DHs parents and the line was so long I just decided to drop them inside!

Re: Hand Cancelling in Queens
I am doing mine tomorrow at the Huntington post office! When I bought my stamps last week I asked them if they would let me do it, and the guy told me yes, they'll just give me the stamp and I can stand to the side and do it. I get out at 3 tomorrow so I figured that's a better time to go than lunchtime or sat. morning.

Re: Hand Cancelling in Queens
I tried to get mine hand cancelled in Brooklyn, they gave me such an attitude and told 'why do you want to do that' ... I wanted to cry and say something like 'cause I'm a bride and make these myself with my bare hands from scraps of paper' ...
but I just lied and said 'your web site says wedding invitations should be hand cancelled'
and you know what they said 'the web site doesn't say the truth sometimes'
guess what though, they went out cancelled by a machine, and my guests got them and loved them and I survived ... but what horrible experience it was that day at the post office.
I wish I never knew about this hand canceling business

Its when your invitation gets hand stamped by the post office instead of having it go through a machine (like normal mail) so it does not ruin your invitation. Usually those who do it have embellishments on them like ribbon or rhinestones...hope that helped.
Some post offices do them some dont, alot give atttitude about it lol

I lived in Middle Village my entire life, when it was still called Elmhurst, a few blocks from Silver Barn. Two yrs ago, FH (a diehard Brooklyn boy) and I moved in together in Maspeth, a block from the post office. I still go there b/c it's the post office nearest to my school. Now we're living in Briarwood. But I'm always in the 'old neighborhood' for shopping and errands.
Are you from MV too? You look familiar too!

I know what you mean!!! When you've put your heart and energy into creating something so special, and someone's just like, 'yeah, ok, no big deal.' That hurts!!

Re: Hand Cancelling in Queens
I brought my daughter's invitations to the Malverne Post Office and they handed me a stamper and the employee and I did the batch of them.
