I went to the post office to mail out my inviations, when I asked about the hand cancelling they said they couldn't guarantee that it wasn't going to go through the machine. That for that I had to 33rd Street and pay a fee of .12 per envelope on top of what I already paid for postage. How rude!!!

Re: hand cancelling invitations
No one should be charging you $$ for hand cancelling - a postal worker confirmed this for me.
As for hand cancelling - I think it's a waste of time. My invites - after I requested HC - got all beat up anyway.

Re: hand cancelling invitations
WAIT!!! I had the same problem with the PO by my office. They said they would charge me $.90 per envelope. So I called the customer service number and they said that they can either not do them or they can only charge you $.05 per envelope over 50. THey told me to go to the one on 8th Ave and 33rd. I went there and tey were so nice. I had 54 invites and she kept saying 'You have 50 invites, RIGHT?' Just so I don't ahve to pay for it. Make sur eyou get on the line that says information. That is where they will do it. Good Luck!
ETA: My invites turned out great. All there was was a small red stamp, otherwise they looked like they were hand delivered. That's what my guest's said.

They aren't charging her for hand cancelling. They are charging to make sure it doesn't go through a machine. hand cancelling is jsut the first step, then it goes through machines, which is why yours were beat up.

I understood what she said - she was referring to hand cancelling. I was told absolutely no charge for hand cancelling...and that mine were going to be hand cancelled.

Re: hand cancelling invitations
We took our invites to the PO in Hicksville and they offered to hand stamp them for us (I didn't care since we had inner envelopes). We said ok since they asked but they didn't charge us for it.

Re: hand cancelling invitations
My invites were not hand cancelled. They were mailed at the PO on 33rd street and nothing happened to them.

Re: hand cancelling invitations
Okay, someone please explain, if you have them hand canceled, they STILL go through a machine afterwards, I don't get it. The post office I went to said it's free for 50 invites and 5 cents I think for additional ones.

Re: hand cancelling invitations
Fi took ours to the PO in Ronkonkoma right off the expressway and they hand canceled them for us for free. He said the guy seemd like he was just yessing him to death cause he told FI to leave them and it would get done. Well I saw the ones I sent my mom and sis and they were hand canceled.

Maybe I'm reading a different subject than you?
Hand cancelling is one thing...sorters are another. All mail has to go through a zip sorter - that's where some of mine got beat up, I'm assuming. And I wouldn't have known this unless I had an invite addressed to us. My neighbor's invite was in perfect condition - and had a different 'hand cancelling stamp' on it than ours did. Which was weird.

Re: hand cancelling invitations
My post office didnt charge either. When I went in with my box of invites, the guy got the stamp out, did like 5 of them so I knew were to stamp them, and handed me the stamper and I canceled them myself!!! Wonder if he could have gotten in trouble for that!! Oh well!

Re: hand cancelling invitations
I hand canceled mines on my own, but I did not recieve any information if the invites were torn. She just handed me a red stamper, and I got busy.

Re: hand cancelling invitations
I hand cancelled my own. The guy at the post office near my apartment was so nice. He gave me the stamper and told me to go ahead. He did tell me they charge a fee for that, but didn't charge me.
