I think all Catering Halls should be Handicap Accessible. As some of you know, my DH has a broken leg. We went to a wedding over the weekend and the room was on the second floor.....he had to hop up two flights of stairs. I felt so bad for him. What made it worse is he is a smoker and had to go back down stairs to have a cigarette. I was so angry, as I watched my DH in pain going up and down stairs!!!

Re: Handicap Accessible................
I agree with you, I would think it was mandatory. We have a guest (FH's cousin) coming to our wedding and he is in a wheelchair permanently and that was somthing we made sure of. Our hall has a raised dancefloor with two steps up to it and they said they'll put a ramp there so he can go on the dancefloor.
I think it's awful that the hall you went to wasn't handicap friendly.

I'd rather not say, but believe it or not, there are alot of RH on Long Island that are not Assesible for disabled people.

Re: Handicap Accessible................
We had to think of this as well because FH's grandma and my grandpa aren't good with stairs.
FH hurt his ankle last year the night before we were going to my friend's wedding. He ended up not coming and I was upset with him but, when I got there and noticed the reception was up a flight of stairs (and the bathrooms were down the flight of stairs) I'm glad he didn't come with me!

Re: Handicap Accessible................
wow that stinks! your poor FH!
i'm quite glad my hall has elevators. one of my aunt's is rather obese, and a heavy smoker....she just can't get around very well. so the elevator will come in handy for her!

Re: Handicap Accessible................
Some places are gradfathered into not having to have handicap accessabliities. It the building is a historic site and it would change the structure it doesn't need to be altered. The law states a build date that is exempt. I would be suprised that a catering 'hall' could be exempt.

Re: Handicap Accessible................
I had to think about this subject with my own wedding because we were having a lot of elderly people there. There was no elevator, which didn't matter in our case because we had the first floor.

Re: Handicap Accessible................
we asked about handicap accesible at all halls we went to see. those that did not would offer to carry the person up the stairs. i thought that was crazy. my guest is over 350 pound guy and it was a long walk. my guest would not be able to enjoy the ch at one place or the reception at another. some places said they were historical landmarks and could not put in an elevator.

Maybe thats why the Westbury Manor doesn't have one........its a pretty old building.

Re: Handicap Accessible................
I only looked at accessible halls. As you know, my sister has a disability and walks with a cane. I made the ENTIRE DAY accessible.

very possible!
we attended a wedding last year that seemed to NOT have an elevator....turns out they did...but it was completely hidden and thus, all the elderly had to use the stairs...and you know how they make them....there are about 40 steps! it was frustrating to watch.

I totally agree - I think every catering hall should be handicap accessible! I feel so bad that your DH had to hop up and down the steps.
