HARDWOOD FLOORS

MY HERO, John (see how I love him when he does things I want ! ) Well he just neatly and carefully ripped out a HUGE portion of the carpeting I have wanted OUT OUT OUT. Some of it is decent, some of it has dark spots (is that dog urine? they had a dog b4 us ) and the stairs are ATROCIOUS ! black and white and all messed up looking... so we're going to get estimates from a few places. and we're also going to price that against laminate flooring..
Has anyone done this research already? (refinishing VS laminate?)

IM SO EXCITED !!!!!!!!!! Its like a dream come true to see hardwood floors that Ive been DYING TO SEE! LOL (see, I dont ask too much )

So any #'s of floor people would be appreciated!

Hi Anna -- I'm jumping in on your thread -- we need that info too! Unfortunately, I think the dark spots are doggie peepee, and I think they're really hard to get rid of. WE have them all over too. Ahhh, the joys of home ownership!

Re: HARDWOOD FLOORS

It is dog pee, and we had them all over our last apartment (yuck!) I think they're nearly impossible to get rid of, cause they have to sand the floor a lot more in that area, then they have to sand the floor around it more to even it out. At least that's what one guy told me. Good luck

Re: HARDWOOD FLOORS

I just got laminate and LOVE it! We jut couldn't afford to get the 'real' wood, but I am so happy with what we got. Ours was done by Perfection Flooring in Port JEff Station (not sure of their #, but I'm sure it's listed)

Stacy- I LOVEEE the laminate flooring. My sis and her hubby did their entire living room and dining room themselves. Its GORGEOUS !
Im kinda hoping we have to go that route! But if they can refinish this hard wood, that would make me happy too !

IM SOOOO EXCITED !!!!

Re: HARDWOOD FLOORS

My hard wood upstairs had doggie pee all over it in one room and I thought I'd never get it out. Well, we managed to! I poured straight bleach on the spots not b/c I thought it would work, but b/c I just wanted to kill any germs, mold, smell it may have caused. Well, it really lightened the stain. Then after some research, I found that if you pour baking soda on it (in a thick layer) and leave it there for 24 hours, it brings up whatever's left of the pee. After the men sanded the floor, you never would have guessed that the floor was damaged by pee! I was told be a few floor guys that I'd never be able to save the floor. Well, they were wrong!

good luck!

Oh- we are doing the laminate hardwood downstairs. Hopefully soon!

Re: HARDWOOD FLOORS

Anna, we are doing our floors as soon as this wretched LT's test is over (1 week from today ~ YIPPEE!!!). Patrick has the numbers of 2 or 3 floor people we are going to get estimates from (all recommendations from friends and family). If you're interested, I'll email you the #'s when he gets home.

Re: HARDWOOD FLOORS Reco's collected from this board

We are going to get estimates on refinishing ours next week. Hopefully they will be done the following week. Here is a list of recommendations I collected from this board.

James Alperti & Sons - 631 261 0499
Mike Donnaly Flooring - 631 264 4511
P&G Flooring 631 981 4037

I have heard that the going rate is $1.50 per sq ft for the basic sanding and varnishing with an oil based varnish.

Thanks girlies. I knew i could count on you.
Fran i'm going to take those numbers down.
Jenn, yes, I'd love your numbers too!

IM SOOO EXCITED !!! I Was screaming in JOY yesterday as my carpets were being rolled up. LOL To think ten years ago that redoing floors would make me happy LOL.

Allure- DH would do it if he knew more about it. But things like this, he prefers professional jobs.
What did it entail (the whole process) Of doing it yourselves? How did you get stains out? and our stairs are this strange black/white plaster/paint stuff! Weird. have no idea. Definately needs the eyes of a pro, lol.

Re: HARDWOOD FLOORS Reco's collected from this board

We had the entire first floor of our house refinished last year (living room, dining room, 2 bedrooms and an office room). We used P&G Flooring [631-981-4037] and we extremely satisfied.

After we moved in and ripped out the w-w carpet, we also noticed a lot of stains. Dog pee stains will be very dark in nature, like black, and they are extremely hard to get out. Water stains, which is what we had because the previous owner used to steam clean the carpets and the water would soak in and never really dry, were gotten out with a little extra umph! by the sander.

Our floors came out awesome. We got a a high grade gloss and we spent $1.50 per sq. ft.
