Hardwood Floors and Cabinet Color

Hardwood Floors and Cabinet Color

DH and I are thinking of putting in a new kitchen floor. We plan to rip out the current crappy tiles that are there now and replace it with hardwood.

My question is, I have cherry-stained cabinets, but the rest of the house has light oak hardwood floors. Should I go with a color in the kitchen that matches the cabinets or should I match the kitchen floor with the rest of the floors in the house? I am having a mental block on this one, so any help would be appreciated.

Is your kitchen attached your living room? or is away from it?

Sorry I should have clarified...my kitchen is attached to the living room.

I would do the Oak to 'open-up' the space, plus all Cherry might be too much. Oak and Cherry should compliment each other.

I would do the same as just advised..

I would also have them do a cherry strip on the floor between the living room and kitchen, so that both floors look like they flow into one another, but yet separates one room from another.

Dont match the cabinets exactly. I cant explain why but it looks very weird when they match exactly.

I have a simliar problem. I have a medium oak in my living room area which opens into my kitchen but the floor is divided by a step.

So we are putting down engineered flooring in a 3 strip style. That way, we have the tones from the living room adn teh cabinets in the floor but dont have an exact match:

Its going down next week so I hope we made the right choice.

Stef - I think your approach may be the answer. I want to bring out some of the warm tones in the cabinets, but not make the floor completely different from the rest of the house.
