I am very confused. I am putting a deposit at the Carltun this Sunday for my 6/11/06 wedding. I keep looking at the Harrison House website and I started to like it. I am going to see it on Saturday (before I book the Carltun).
Can anyone tell me which place is better? nicer? I am having about 180-200 people on a Sunday. Any reviews will help.
Thank you all.

Re: Harrison House vs. The Carltun
I really like both of them, but I do like the Carltun ballroom better and the gardens are beautiful. But at the Harrison House you have the benefit of it being a hotel as well....Tough decision, but i'd pick the Carltun!

Re: Harrison House vs. The Carltun
I looked at both and am having my wedding at the Carltun..
While I really loved the Harrison House-- there were things about it I did not like- I did not like the ballroom set up, nor did I like the guest rooms- but I did not see the bridal suite.. the outside is beautiful as are the grounds when you drive up.. They have a lot of great features like the bar upstairs for hanging out after the wedding- which I also think would be cool for pictures.. I think it really was the shape of the ballroom that I didn't like- I think wonderful for the ceremony portion-- but weird for the reception.. I think if you fall in love with it and get creative with how it is set up.. it would be wonderful.
I have also heard that they do the reception outside there- which I think would be amazing-- and your timing would work out great weatherwise.

Re: Harrison House vs. The Carltun
Thanks for the quick reply. Is the ballroom that bad at the Harrison?? I love Carltun's, it's very simple yet elegant, but the outside of the Harriosn looks very nice. We both love the outside for a reception. This is like the biggest decision of my life.....lol...to pick the right wedding hall...

the ballroom is not a square shape - it has the dance floor to one side - and is sorta round on the other side

the ballroom is pretty-- it is just as snowprincess said- not one big room.. it all depends on how many people you have.. I would def take a look at it- and see what you like better.

I looked at both of them. i prefer the Carltun just because at the Harrison House you cannot really have the band in the room with you and not all the guests can see eachother due to the odd size of the ballroom.

I looked at both and have been to weddings at both and I would go with the Carltun. While the grounds and curb appeal of the Harriosn House are amazing, for the amount of people you are having the ballroom at the Harrison House is just not a good fit (IMO).

Harrison House bride here Just want to clear up one thing. THey did an entire renovation of the ballroom so the dance floor is now in the middle of the room with equal number of tables on both sides.
Let me tell you why I love the harrison house. From the minute you pull up to the place, you just literally get swept away (SO CHEEZY! i KNOW) but its like from the minute you pull onto the grounds, its so peaceful and surreal. We loved how relaxed the cocktail hour would be with people milling through three different rooms, sitting on sofas, comfortable chairs and then of course regular tables and chairs. We liked to look of soft chandeliers in the each of the rooms and how the bar would be set up. Then you walk into the ballroom (which again is completely renovated) with the raised ceilings, chandeliers, almost ceiling to floor windows and its just so elegant. The only thing I didn't like was the dance floor seemed smaller than a lot of ones I've seen but my DJ assures me that when a dance floor is smaller people are more willing to get up and dance since they don't feel like they are in the spotlight.
The things that really hooked us was that people could go right to their rooms afterwards or there is a huge, GIGANTIC bar on the top floor. Some of the best weddings I've attended included great after parties (plus there's a bowling alley, too).
It really just depends on what feels right to you when you go to both places. It depends on the wedding you've always imagined and who you think would be able to provide such a setting.
Good luck!
Edited to add: I'll post some pictures for you as soon as my computer cooperates. I went in december of 2004.

Re: Harrison House vs. The Carltun
We looked at the Harrison house but did not book there because the main ball room is really small. If you have a larger party then they will put some of your guests into another room around the corner. I felt that was not so nice for those guests. We also looked at the Carlton and loved it, but the price they quoted for a kosher twilight ($220 per person for a Sunday twilight) was just out of our budget. Sniff. Oh well, if $ were no object then I would book with the Carlton.

Thank you girls. It looks like the Carltun got more votes (I do love it), but I will look at the HH, since the ballroom was recently renovated (thanks jimmygrl for the details) and I do love the outside. How is the price of HH? Is it same as the Carltun's (for a Sunday)???

I'm not sure for a sunday but for a saturday its about $165/pp if I'm remembering correctly.
Alright, sorry they are so small. When I hit the resize button it shrinks up.
1. Is the Harrison house outside 2. Is the entranceway 3. This is a terrible picture of the reception, you can't really tell becaues we weren't allowed in because they were setting up for a ceremony but the dance floor is in the middle of the room to the left of the picture and then the raised ceilings, etc. 4. And then there is the pub, this is only 1 of the 4 rooms.
I've been to affairs at both and personally I like the Carltun better. Not saying that the Harrison House is not good, it is. But I would choose the Carltun.

Re: Harrison House vs. The Carltun
We stayed in the bridal suite at the Harrison House and it was really nice. Not a reason to chose the place but something to add to the pro column. Everyone there was really nice to us even though we had our reception down the street at the Metropolitan. I recommend checking it out.

Re: Harrison House vs. The Carltun
I had my wedding at the Harrison House (before the new renovations) and it was really beautiful. The grounds, the mansion itself are all just lovely, and I had my band play in the ballroom without a problem (which also included my 175 guests). It's worth checking it out.
The Carltun is very beautiful too - I went to see it, but without an appointment so I couldn't see too much, but what I saw was beautiful. It just wasn't available for the day that I wanted to have my wedding.
