Harry Potter question

Here are some questions any avid reader of Harry should know – for some reason, I am totally unclear.

A few things:

#1: Harry’s mom is half muggle right?

#2: WHY did Voldemort kill Harry’s parents? Was he actually after Harry (like did he know of this prophecy thing that far back and was trying to thwart Harry?) or was he mad at Harry’s parents for something and if so what? Was it that his parents were trying to get in the way of his evil doings?

#3: Wasn’t Voldemort Tom Riddle in school? How did he get the name Voldemort?

Jenny, I wil try to answer. Just finished the last book. not guaranteeing that i am right, here goes...

1 - yes, harry's mom is muggle born. like Hermione. hence, her sister, harry's aunt is a muggle. So i guess that make's Harry half muggle. (or at least a quarter, or something like that)

2 - i think the 5th book leaves us thinking that Voldemort tried to kill harry because of what little he knew of the prophecy (remember he had a spy listening in to the conversation at the leaky cauldron place, so he heard part of it). i imagine he killed his parents so he could get to harry. plus, i think he wanted to kill them anyway since they opposed him.

3- he chose the name voldemort very young, and created his name for school (although that may have been his given name, not sure). in the second book (with the snake thing) he unscrambles the letter to his name and it spells 'I am Lord Voldemort' or something like that. i forget the big fancy word for it, but the letters spell the same thing when you unscramble them. But you need his middle name too, and I forgot what that was, something like Valmoro i think?????? Tom Valmoro Riddle or something like that.

Jenny, Harry's mother was a witch born to muggle parents (just like Hermione).

I too, was a bit confused about the prophecy, but I think Harry's parents were in the original order fighting Voldemort so he wanted to kill them, but he did go to kill Harry because of the prophecy.

I read it so fast, I think I need to read it again.

boy, you're right, these books have so much . i need to read them slower, but i can't stand it. i just read and read until i get to the end. and then i am disappointed that ti is over!

Everyone pretty much answered how I was going to answer.

I do want to add this about the prophecy and the whole Voldemort thing. I think Voldemort wanted to kill Harry because of the threat of the prophecy. He believed that Harry was the one that the prophecy was about. He also wanted to kill Harry's parents because they were part of the Order and he was trying to kill all of the members. I think that's why he himself went to kill all of them in one night. I believe he had the death eaters kill most of the others?

Also, Tom Riddle changed his name to Lord Voldemort because Riddle was his father's last name, and his dad was a muggle, and he didn't want to have a name that wasn't pureblood wizard.
