Has anybody been to Colorado Springs lately?

Has anybody been to Colorado Springs lately?

DH and I are trying to figure out where we want to move to. Our two choices so far are Colorado Springs and Atlanta. (Our company has offices in these 2 locations so that's why we chose them.)

I'm just wondering what any of you think or know about Colorado Springs. DH and I will eventually go out there and check it out for ourselves, but I'm just curious.
DH used to live in Atlanta so he already knows a lot about what the good towns to live in are.

Thanks!

I just talked to DH, who is a Colorado boy. He said that Springs is pretty nice. It is much smaller than Atlanta, but still a decent sized city. And it's close enough to Denver (1 hr.) that most amenities are within easy reach.

He said that with the large military base there, it's likely to be much more conservative than Atlanta. He also remembers it having a small gang problem, but this was a few years ago.

I know it's not much info, but I can get specifics if you need.

Thanks! Any other details that he should happen to know would be great. We've been looking at houses online and they're WAY more affordable for us than the housing here in VA. I just don't want to move there if it's a hole in the wall type of town. Denver being an hour away isn't bad though....and the skiing and outdoors-type activities is a big plus.
Atlanta is just too hot for me - I'm a winter girl!

It's definitely not a hole in the wall. It's right along the freeway, so if you're driving up from south CO to Denver or cities further north, you know when you've hit Springs b/c traffic slows way down.

It also has its own airport. A few of the big, well-known airlines fly into it, I believe.

Is there a particular reason it would have to be Springs? There are some other really great cities in CO.

We only picked the Springs because our company has an office there. But we'd be open to picking somewhere close by to live. Got any names of towns?

Unfortunately I didn't get any names. The only city I'm very familiar with is Ft. Collins, which is way north. And DH isn't as helpful as he could be - he gets sidetracked talking about how the mountains near Springs are supposedly mounted on springs so they can withstand a nuclear attack. Um, okay honey, that's fascinating, but that's not going to help Anniegrl find a place to live...

Am familiar with Denver area, not as much with the springs other than to visit. It's beautiful. colorado is much more conservative than NY and much slower pace, but weather is absolutely gorgeous. More days of sunshine per year than Hawaii. If his salary is not affected by the move you'll get way more for your money out west. But in general salaries are lower out there which may affect you, if not him

If you have a choice, Denver is a bigger city with a lot of nice surrounding suburbs. The only other area which you might be interested in is Boulder, but it depends on your interests. Boulder is where the University is located, so it's a much younger town. And it's infamous for being kind of the only liberal strong hold in the state. Very much an outdoorsy, nature, organic foods kind of atmosphere. Colorado Springs will be a great choice, though. Not trying to steer you away from it. Definitely not a whole in the wall town. They have hockey and a beautiful 5 star hotel there called the Broadmoor that you could look up online if you want some scenery or to book if you want to go out and check it out before deciding.
