Has anyone been in an accident and your airbag went off?
Just curious if the airbag itself caused you any damage. I'm 5'2' and have to sit fairly close to the steering wheel to reach the pedals. I always worry that if I'm in an accident the airbag going off will do more harm then good. I'm trying to make an effort to sit as far back as I possibly can so I'm curious to hear anyone's experiences.

I'm completely paranoid about this! I'm 5'1' and I have to sit right up on the steering wheel too, also I wear glasses when I drive at night so I'm terrified of getting into an accident then, the airbag going off and my glasses shattering into my eyes!
It's totally insane and crazy, I know.
Allegedly the worst an airbag can do is burn your arms upon deployment. But I think I've heard that some people have broken their nose?

My friend was in an accident (she hit a telephone pole) and the airbag deployed and her face got burned. She doesn't have any scarring and it wasn't her entire face. She is like 5'6 I think, so I don't think she sits that close.

My airbag went off - I'm 5'9' - it hit me right in the face. No damage was done but i bounced back and forth for a while until i opened my eyes and relized what happened.

Ditto!
but I've been in 2 accidnets and it never went off. I hit someone at about 35 mph..but it wasn't exactly head on, it was sort of angled (my whole frame got bent to the right) and no airbag
and I was rearended ,,I was stopping, she was going...I don't know how fast really...40? no airbag again..
Sitting so close hurt my both rimes, but not b/c of the airbag...the first time my kneww smacked into the dashboard and the 2nd tmime my chest was flung HARD into the steering wheel

My Grandma and Grandpa were in an accident a few years ago. My Grandma is 5'3' and both she and my Grandpa had burns on their faces.

(i'm 5'4')......if i were you, I would def sit further back....i was left with a burning sensation in my chest...i guess the force of the impact combined with the airbag and seatbelt really did a number on me...plus, whatever chemicals/fumes that came out when the airbag deployed, burned the sleeve on the coat I was wearing....

If I sit further back then I can't reach the peddles!

I try to lean the back of the chair a little so there is more room between me and the steering wheel except I have to keep sitting up to change the radio station!

You could always disable the airbags. There is usually a fuse that you can remove on the car that does this.
Gotta be careful when doing this though. Playing around with the wrong fuse could actually set the airbags off.

I'm 5'3 and was in the passenger seat of a car when the airbags went off. I had my seatbelt on and it did no damage to me at all.

I hit a tree in December of last year, both airbags deployed. Very scary I did not get hurt, the smell and the sound when they deployed scared me the most. I am 5'3 and I had to sit close also, I was driving an Acura IMO Acuras are good cars to drive (if you are very tall).

I'm 4'8' (think I beat everyone ) and when I started driving, my parents looked into having an on/off switch installed in my car. This was around the time it started coming out that the passenger side airbags are harmful to young children. We never did it, and I remember them having a lot of trouble, maybe because it was a new thing and the manufacturers or mechanics were reluctant. Maybe it's something to look into again...
