Has anyone been to Molokai or Lanai in Hawaii

OK - so I think we have settled on Hawaii as our HM destination. We have been to Oahu so we are not going there again (if anyone wants info about this island let me know). We are going to Maui and probably Kauai, we want a third island and these are 2 that local Hawains suggested to us when we were there, anyone been to these islands before or know about them?

How many days are you planning on spending on all of the islands?

Hey Laura..
I'm going to Oahu and Kauai next week for vacation. If you tell me what I need to know about Oahu [and I hear it's not too great actually!]..I promise to fill you in on Kauai when I get back!

Molokai is awesome if you are the rugged outdoors types. The paddling is great! Lots of fun stuff. I've never been to Lanai but I know is very small and is a sleepy town - may be similar to Kaui.

We are planning on going for about 2 weeks - 6 days at Maui and then splitting up the 2 islands.

Kauai is honestly one of the most beautiful places on earth. We did 6 in Kauai and 7 in Maui.

Which island are you doing first do you know yet? I def. recommend going to Kauai first. It is so relaxing and there isn't much to do there - its nice to wind down after the wedding. Maui has more to do and a better nightlife that IMO its better to go there once you have rested up.

I liked the Big Island and Maui. The Big Island has active lava flows.. fun to see and hike (not crazy adventurous, just cool).. also scenic drives to see waterfalls. I stayed at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel on the Big Island..it has a nice beach with natural protection & sea turtles.

I went on a snorkel cruise off Lanai from Maui and it was a memorable experience! Lanai I've heard is small, but I haven't been on this island. It could be nice.

Oahu - wiakiki was not that great.

It reminded me of a midwest city (like miniappolis - spelling not right sorry) on the ocean. However, the food was really good!

Things to do: We actually had a great time once we left wiakiki, we rented a jeep and spent a few nights on the Northshore (highly recommend this!) We snorkeled in sharks cove and saw sea turtles.

Hike Diamond head.

Another great place for snorkeling/beach was Waimanalo Bay Recreational Area.

Things we did not do but heard was good - Dole pineapple plant, helicopter ride, renting little 4 wheelers, Go to the polynesian Museam and the lua there is known as the best and authentic, and historic sites in Honolulu.

Enjoy! Let me know how it is.

I love your pics! It looks amazing! I heard the big island was very family/kid orientated? I think we wanted to stay away from that scene. Did you think this was the case?

Good point - I never really thought about it, but it makes sense to do a more laid back place first then a more active island. Thanks!

maybe it was the time of year but we didnt see that many families with kids (we were there from Sept. 23-Oct. 1).... a lot of our friends that saw our pictures kept asking us if we were on a private island or something (as you can see not many people on the beach or at the pool)... Big Island offers a lot of great sightseeing, it is def. worth seeing...

We went to the Big Island! It was absolutely incredible. It was the last island of our HM. We did 5 on Maui, 4 on Kauai and 3 on the Big Island.
We really enjoyed ourselves. We stayed at the Four Seasons which was just indescribable. It was so amazing and beautiful. We took a day trip to Volcano National Park and saw all the past lava flows it was so out of this world. You really can't describe it. We were able to see the actual flow as well. It was way high up on the mountain (in April of 04) Then we hung out in the city of Kona which we really liked alot. It offered some great restaurants, shopping and some night life. We also took a drive to see the waterfalls. We were there for 3 days and it was the perfect amount of time for us. We got to experience everything we wanted to... and for me the most important part was that we got to see the volcanoes- a dream of mine that came true. The other islands can't offer that.

I should also add that we took a day trip to Lanai while we were on Maui. It was wonderful-- for a day. (we took a catamaran over & tour of the island) There is only one big resort and it is mainly for golfers-- and basically that's what people go to the resort to do. We hung out on the small beach that the resort had. The resort is gorgeous, but it is very secluded and a total escape from everything. Basically the town is all residential for the residents of the island-only 2 restaurants and a small handfull of shops- so you are very limited to the resort. Also Lanai is NOT easy to get to if you are staying there. You have to fly into Maui, then take a cab to the port which is about 45 min. away, then take a boat to Lanai.
Our guide was telling us that ALOT of celebrities go to Lanai because it is more exclusive and very private. So we thought that was cool.
So if you are interesed in going to the island I suggest the day trip through Trilogy Tours... but other than that- I'd go to the Big Island.

Thanks! Good to know about Lanai. I know that it is secluded - it sounds like it may be too secluded - neither my FH nor I like to golf so if that is the extent of it then it may not be our cup of tea.
