When is the best time of year to go? Is there anything else to do around there or is more of a 1-2 day thing?

I went in 2001. We stayed in Scottsdale (southern AZ near Phoenix) for a few days and then drove up to the Grand Canyon. I loved it out there. Near the canyon itself - which you can do in a day or 2 (and it is beautiful - there is even a hotel you can stay at the top of the canyon) there is a town call Sedona, which has all different shops and is supposedly 'the psychic center' of the world. It has the 'red rocks' there. I guess what you can do if you want is stay at a resort down in Phoenix and then take a trip up to the GC.
eta: i went in July 2001 and it was 110 degrees - a dry heat - but still 110 degrees! I think it is nice to go in the fall / winter.

OMG, you are going to be awed by the Grand Canyon. I went as a day trip from Las Vegas. Flew into the rim. If you go for a few days, you could camp inside the canyon, stay at the hotel at the rim and do day hikes, mule rides. I'm not really sure if this is close, but Sedonia is supposed to be stunning, might be worth it to make your way there. Or hop to Vegas
ETA: I went in February and the weather was great. Mid 60's-70's

Once 2005 comes and we get new vacation time I want to go there. I am glad the weather is good in Feb because we want to take one vacation in Feb and then one again next fall. It might be cool to do the Grand Canyon and Vegas in one trip!

FH & I are planning on taking a trip so he can see it too. I would definitely want to stay 2 days at the Canyon and then go onto Sedona.

Iwent there!! It was one of our stops on our honeymoon!! I can tell you from experience, don't go in February it was 20 degrees when we were there just this past february!!!! It is freezing!! There is not too much to do over there in the close vicinity of the canyon. There is a Flintstones campground down the road that was very very cool. It had bedrock city! Everything is built just like the cartoon. I'll try and post pictures of it tomorrow. It was really cute!!

Really? I went there in late February 2001. I wore a sweater in the early morning (7 am) and a short-sleeved t-shirt for the rest of the day. It wasn't cold at all!

Your so lucky!! We were there around feb. 15th and it was freezing. I'll post a pic of me in a minute of my ski gear I had to wear. Oh and here is a pic of the flintstone campground!!
we went on our honeymmoon..day trip from Las Vegas too...I personally don't think you could spend too much time there unless you get a cabin at the base or like to hike...
