Has Anyone done DIY centerpieces?

I am planning on doing my own branch centerpieces with crystals as there is no way I am spending $2,000 for the 10-12 I would need. I was in the city today in the floral area and saw birch branches for $8.50 a bunch. I plan on draping crystals from the branches though. Has anyone worked with these before? Is this the type of branches I should be using to drape crystals or should I use something else?

I am definitely doing my own centerpieces, that will double as a table number, and are eco-friendly. I found a great idea the other day that I absolutely love.

I don't plan to have big centerpieces (it just doesn't fit with the vibe of the event I'm having.)
