Has Anyone Done or Know anyone that has donet the NYC Teachers Fellowship?
Thinking about changing my career focus and dropping out of my MBA program and pursuing a Masters in Education instead...
The Fellowship might be my best bet- but I wanted to hear some people's experiences with it....

there are quite a few people on the boards who applied this year - joeslauren, aprbride. i have been debating it also and they have been great with info. Shannon (Sha01129) joined the program last year, but she hasn't posted in a while, so i do not know how it is going.

My FBIL is doing it now. They put you in the worst schools. I think he likes it and will stick with it.

Is it stupid to be afraid of teaching in Brooklyn or the Bronx?

I am doing it in June. It is not stupid to be afraid. I think you have to know exactly what you are getting yourself into, and want to do it anyway. I can't wait.

Just wanted to add, if you are def. going to do the NYCTF, don't bother taking any Masters course work yet. They will not let you transfer any over.

Kelly couldn't have said it better. You really have to do lots of research and know what the program entails. We've been bouncing ideas off each other for quite some time now. It's tru that you can be put in the worst schools but if you know how the program works, you can make it work for you.

I just am sort of at a crossroads.
I have just completed 18 out of 56 credits toward my MBA but I am not sure I really will use it- being in 'industry' might now be for me...
was thinking teaching might be my best bet...
it's true that you basically have to commit to the school for 2 years, right? then you can go somewhere else?
And in that time you get your MA?

Yes, as soon as you are done with your Masters (at a school of THEIR choosing), you are done with your comittment to the city. This is a major career change for both Lauren and I as well, her coming from Finance, and me from Publishing. It is a lot to think about, but I think both of us (Lauren and I) feel that the good of the program outweighs the bad. BUT, it is SO important to know exactly what the negatives will be (and there are many), and to have a good support system!
Lauren gave me some links to message boards for the NYCTF. That helped me see the ins and outs of the program. I'll post them in a sec.

you are comitted to that school for two years and come out with your MA (while getting all the benefits of a regular teacher). you come out with a transitional B license and are free to go whereever you please once your two years is up. also, you pay a total of $4000 for attaining your MA from some reputable schools.

Re: Has Anyone Done or Know anyone that has donet the NYC Teachers Fellowship?
just to let you know there are other ways...
if you have 36 credits in a subject you can be NYC certified..(english and SS are harder to get jobs with just this certificate...but definitely possible) and Spec Ed will emergency certify anyone with a BA...
no you wonder about the MA...well since NYS requires teachers to get a MA to continue working...it is ALL tax deductable...this is for all teachers that are working and getting their MA (sorry you can't get the MA first)
and then you can deduct any little school supply as well...
this way you don't have to work in their schools...and you are not committed...but JMHO my favorite school that I ever worked in was in NYC...don't give it a bad rap...

Re: Has Anyone Done or Know anyone that has donet the NYC Teachers Fellowship?
My undergraduate degree is a double major- history and Political Science- so I am sure I would be a SS teacher.
I have 18 credits toward my MBA (variety of marketing, business, economics, and computer courses).
I need to really make a decision about what I want to do before I spend another $2500 next semster.
I am REALLY not keen on teaching in Bronx/Brooklyn at ALL.....
BUT if you only have to commit for 2 years- it wouldn't be so bad.
On those message boards I'm reading about people that can't even get placement and have to sub everywhere and I wouldn't want to do that either..
Re: Has Anyone Done or Know anyone that has donet the NYC Teachers Fellowship?
apr...do you have math credits? if you do...do not go through the fellowship...get certified on your own at 65 Court St...then you have some choice as to where you go...
Sassy - I was SS in a FABULOUS school - I am FMing you my old AP's name ...write a resume specifically to her - using my name...it is a huge department (35 teachers) so they are almost always looking for someone

I'll be honest, I know someone that did it, and was placed in a very low-performing school in the Bronx. Of course, this is only her case in particular, every one is different... but I know she did have a very hard time there. She's now in a private school, post-fellowship and much happier.
If you are chosen, what a great opportunity though!!!!! To get the education for free, and work experience at the same time. Best of luck!!
