I was in the laundromat the other day and a man came in. After he starts his wash and had already added the laundry detergent, he added ammonia and Pine-Sol.
I've never seen anyone do this.

no, I've never seen that. Did you see what he was washing?
Maybe there was an oder or stain or something he was trying to get out? Pine-sol gets out grease well, mayeb he had a bad grease stain? I do't know how safe that is for your laundry though?
Maybe he is just insane?

Ammonia & Pine-sol? No, I've never seen anyone do that...did smoke start coming out of the machine? I would imagine you would only do something like that if you wanted to dissolve your clothing, not clean it.

As far as I could see, he put the ammonia and pine-sol in once the wash started. He had 3 washers going and put it in all of them.
He also had normal detegent and bleach with him.

Re: Has anyone done or seen this? Re: Laundry
When my aunt was very ill and on hospice they cleaned her sheets with detergent and ammonia for colors, bleach for whites. It disinfects more, especially if it is in a public laundromat and being used for a sanitary/hospital like environment. They never added the Pine Sol, maybe that just makes it smell nice?
ETA: The hospice workers said in public laundromats germs can mulitply in the washers, and it is always good to use bleach or ammonia.

yes, i've seen it. My father owns a couple laundromats, and I've seen many landscapers use that combo in their wash. Apparently, it's great on grease stains and that grass smell.

Very interesting. I figured there was something behind it.

I used to use that for FH's work clothes (he used to build gas stations - so he always had oil, grease, diesel, you name it on him). I preferred to use Lestoil, but if I ran out, I'd use Pine Sol and ammonia - - - I think I found it on a website as a grease-cutter. I know both my mom and my FMIL endorsed it as a great laundry remedy.

Im confused. I thought you were never to mix ammonia and bleach together because it makes a dangerous gas?

YES, either one or the other! Never together!
ETA: I use the bleach only with whites, but now I guess they make color safe bleach?

I usually only do the white too, but if I get the Clorox 2, I use it the same as regular bleach?
Still put in detergent and the bleach in during the Add Bleach cycle?
