We're leaving for a cruise from New Orleans next week and we're spending two nights there - one night before the cruise and one night after it. We've never been there before and I was hoping to get some first hand recommendations for things to do while we're down there. Thanks in advance, if anyone can help!

Go to the French Quarter. And take a tour on one of the horse drawn wagon things by Jackson park or whatever that is called down there.

Re: Has anyone ever been to New Orleans?
You will be in the French quarter, thats great.
1. Cats Meow- Kareoke bar. I had THE best time in that bar.
2. Cafe du Mond- Must. Get. Beignets. Dont miss this. Its an institution and a MUST see.

3. Garden District - Some of the oldest most beautiful houses in NO.
4. Any walking tour- Some are better than others. But its worth going on one night (or day) walking tour of the city.
5. There is a public square right by Cafe Du Mond that street performes do show at. Some of these shows are amazing! If you ask at your hotel they will tell you the name of the square.
6. Take time to walk around Burbon street. You will walk slowly and go into all the shops. DEFINITLY go into the voo-doo shops.
7. There is a bar (can remember the name) that has a 'volcano' or fire in the main area. Its also an NO institution and makes GREAT hurricanes!
8. There is a jazz club right by Cats Meow that has great jazz. But you can go anywhjere and see amazing jazz played, I think.
For the walking tours just be aware that people who reccomend them get a kickback. So every tour is 'the best tour'. As at the hotel for your best bet.
Hope this helps!

You are so welcome!!!!
I think the best thing I can say about NEW O was that everyone was friendly and nice. It REALLy was like a big party everywhere you went!
I just loved walking the city and going into all the shops. And you can eat CHEEP!
Oh. There is one place and I dont remember the name. Emeril Lagasse did a story on this small roadside place to eat that is supposed to be THE place to get crawfish/po boys etc. I THINK Oprah also went to the same place.
Worth checking out if its not a car ride away.

Re: Has anyone ever been to New Orleans?
OMG you are so going to one of my absolute FAVORITE places on earth!!! I can't tell you enough how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE New Orleans!!!
You must go to the French Quarter... hit up that whole area if you could. Go to Pat O'Briens. I especially recomend going to Lafitte's Blacksmith Shoppe. It's the OLDEST bar in AMERICA!!! Supposidly it's haunted. But it's sooo awesome!! It survived fires and floods and all!!!
You can also take some tours of the french quarter. They have some cool ones... like the ghost tour, the voodoo tour, the vampire tour, the cemetary tour! I recomend any of them!! They are cool and you get to walk around and learn things about that amazing place!!!
Cafe Du Monte has the BEST COFFEE and those Benyay's (can't spell but sound that out) ever!!!! Buy some coffee to take home too!!!!
Take a ride on the trolley!!! You can go to this cool local place... it's not in the french quarter... but it's not too far. It's called Cooter Brown's! I remember going in there and the bathroom walls said 'Yanks Suckk'... hahahaha!!! i find things like that funny for some reason!! We really just wanted a real local place to really get a feel for the town... and that was an awesome place!!
Have fun!! I know you aren't there for too long... but do as much as you can!! It's sooo worth it!! I can't wait to go back!!!!
