Has anyone ever done their own taping for sheetrock?
DH put up the walls and the ceiling in the master bedroom and the nursery (well he had some help, he didn't do it all by himself). Now it's time for us to tape and put in the compound. Should we hire someone to do it? Has anyone ever done it themselves before? Is it as hard as people say? I think he could do it. He's great with this kind of stuff. But he's never done it before so he's nervous. Looking to get ideas from anyone who has any kind of experience with this.
Thanks.

DH has done it. Unfortunately, it's one of those things where 'practice makes perfect'. I often wish my DH would hire someone to do it, only because it can be very time consuming and messy.
My DH rented a sander from an equipment rental company and that helped a lot! Not only did it save him a lot of time, but it sucked up a lot of the dust! Just something to consider if your DH decides to go ahead and do it on his own.

I agree with Jenny. 'It's one of those things where practice makes perfect.' My hubby did most of the taping in our house, but had his cousin do most of it. If the taping and spackling doesn't come out good, you might see lines on your walls after you paint. It's also a messy job with all the sanding, and the spackle is kinda messy too.

it's messy. We did it for one wall in the living room and wall is just OK, not perfect. Thank goodness we had a contractor do the taping for the rest of the house.

I would hire someone. A friend of ours did a lot of work in their house themselves. The one thing they hired out was the taping. I didn't think it was a big deal, but the hubby (who is very handy and practically gutter their entire house) said that it is one thing that if done wrong you will really be able to tell, not to mention the mess.

We gutted our entire house ourselves, and that was one of the few things that we hired outside help to do. Taping and spackling is definitely a skill, and as the other ladies said, if you mess it up, things will not look right when it's all done.

i agree taping and spackling is hard and you have to knack for it.

My husband did all of our's in our co-op....and he did a beautiful job, even though he's fairly new to it. YOu cant' even notice where he did it once the paint went over it. But, he is an artist, and an extreme perfectionist when it comes to those sort of things...he spent about 2 weeks finishing off the bathroom, the living room, and a hallway. It was a lot of work!!!!

Here's what we're thinking of doing. DH is going to start it. He's read a lot on it and thinks he can do it. My friend's dad does this for a living and we're going to have him come in to finish everything and make sure we did it ok. If all goes well we should have the rooms done and be ready to move in by mid August.
