Has anyone ever had a nerve block in their spine?

I am going to a pain management doctor tomorrow and this is one of the options. Another is a muscle block. Has anyone ever had this? TIA

I had surgery for a herniated disc...L4 L5 seven years ago. I have experienced the pain of nerve damage for seven years! It is the WORST!

I just found out I have another herniated disc and according to the doctor...It's enormous! I don't want surgery, so I am going to try pain management.

I'd love to hear how it goes for you! Keep me posted & good luck. I hope you feel better!!!!

BTW...Which office are you going to use?

I've been going to Pain Management for my two herniated disks. I went for my second shot last week this block did not work.

Actually just had my first injection last week (C4, C5, and C6 have all herniated completely causing MAJOR pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in my upper extremities). Going for my second injection on Thursday. I feel about 30% better this week than before the injection, and hopefully with the series of 3, a good majority of the pain and upper ext. problems will cease.

I definitely recommend trying it--they knocked me out with about 5mg of Versed (sleepy meds), and I had a bit of pain that night--but otherwise, didn't feel a thing. For some people it works, others it's absolutely no use---but you won't know until you try.

Good luck!!!

ETA: I'm using Dr. Main and Dr. Bahkshi on Park Ave in NYC--they are both spinal neurosurgeons (I wanted to go right to the spinal doctors, instead of a pain management physician in case surgery was the only option)

I am using Dr. Wyngardner (sp) in New Hyde Park. I have rods in my back and now my lower back is the problem. They want to fuse the rest of my spine but I am not ready for that yet. That is why this is my only option I will let you know how it goes

Re: Has anyone ever had a nerve block in their spine?

I had a decompressive lumbar laminectomy 1 year ago, Dr. Nancy Epstein - head of Neuro at Winthrop and the best back surgeon around. My life was hell until then - I had spinal stenosis - a pice of my disk (L4-5) had broken off and was pressing into my spinal cord. Surgery was the final option and I am so happy I had it. Honestly, my quality of life improved immensely (after the rehab) and I recommend her for anyone considering surgery -
Good luck!!

Re: Has anyone ever had a nerve block in their spine?

are you calling the nerve block the same as a cortisone epidural??
i had that done w/ my pain management 16 months ago
it didn't work for me - i wound up getting worse and having emergency surgery
i coudn't walk and have other issues

the surgery was successful and with alot of PT i am doing alot better

i had a huge herniated disc l5 s1 and had an emergency microdiscectomy at winthrop days after the cortisone epidural
i am sure everyone responds differently
