has anyone ever heard of this?

Original post by LB and DC

a friend of mine from work was telling me about her daughter's shower. apparently this bride has about 10 bridesmaids and they decided that when it was time to open the presents, that they were going to do it 'the way they always did' and open the presents for the bride, then hand them to her!

has anyone ever heard of this?

IMO part of the reason people come to a shower - and expend effort wrapping your present/having it wrapped - is so they can see the look on the bride's face when she opens it! am i wrong? have things changed?

now don't get me wrong - i have heard of showers where the gifts are wrapped in clear cellophane so that the bride doesn't have to open her gifts there (don't like that idea either but that's just me). but this seemed a little crazy to me.

like i said, JMO.

i am glad to see more responses with the other POV! i was thinking how strange it was, but then i realized that other brides must think how strange it is that the bride has to open all her own presents! i guess, whatever you are used to and comfortable with, is what works best.

just one question for girls whose BMs opened their gifts for them - did the guests say anything or seem to find it strange, or were they used to it being done that way as well?

In all honesty, I have never been to a shower where the bride opens the gifts by herself. And I've been to a lot of showers.

At my shower, each BM gave herself a job:
one kept moving the unopened gifts towards me, the next would cut off ribbons, etc, pass them to my BM making the bow hat and remove most of the wrapping paper then give the gift to me, one BM wrote down what I got, another managed the cards, another removed the gifts from the stage and another put all wrap in the garbage. I just sat there, receiving gifts, reading cards, showing off the gift and moving on. And it still took almost 2 hours!

ETA: I mis-read your post...no, nobody seemed phased. In fact, most guests made one of two comments:
1. 'God! That was the LONGEST gift opening process I have seen. It felt like FOREVER!'
or
2. 'You have one organized bridal party!'

I've been to showers where this was done, and I don't like it. Neither does my sis.
Why bother wrapping the gift then ?

I got really upset earlier this year when at a friend's shower this happened - her BM's ripped open the packages and just handed her the card and the unwrapped gift. Now, I went to a lot of trouble to wrap the gift and decorate it so that it looked like a wedding cake. And the bride to be didn't get to see it. BUT when it came time for the BMs' gifts, those they left wrapped when the handed them to the bride.

At my shower, I opened ALL of my own gifts, and my 6 year old niece (FG) helped me take the paper off and handed the bows and ribbons to the girl making the bo-k.

I think maybe we were at the same shower!! I was so upset when I went to a shower and was all excited to see my friend's reaction when she opened my gift and then her MOH just hands it to her with my card. I had over 80 people at my shower and I opened all my own gifts, my BM and MOH took the ribbons off but I unwrapped everything!

I don't like this either, but i was at one shower where i was SO glad the BMs opened the presents..... It was a huge shower, there were like 70 - 80 women there, and if the bride opened every single one herself, we would have been sitting there for 4-5 hours.... Took over an hour as it was, with the BMs opening them.

Like I said, I don't agree with it, hell i would of thrown a fit if I didn't get to open all mine! But, in circumstances like that - I was glad the process was sped up a little.

At my best friend's shower in June she had a ton of gifts to open up. At first we handed them to her and things were going smoothly. Then we really started running out of time. I started making the hat and the other girls started taking the bows off and handing the gift and card (opened) to her. I felt bad and tried to get them to stop but we still had to do coffee and cake and really just ran out of time. You don't want to leave a gift unopened, so I understand why they might suggest that. I do agree that it takes the fun out. I love gift wrapping and I would be a little annoyed if tore my gift open. But she did get to see everything wrapped before hand.

i thought thats how it was done
I find opening the presents extremely broing especillay for the guests
at my friends shower we all had a job: one person got the present, someone opened or started to open it, someone did the bows, someone put them to the side and another girl wrote down who gave what

i just thought that was how it always goes

I've never heard of that. That just seems horrible for those that spent time to decorate and wrap their presents.

I would not like that.

You're right the best part is seeing the bride's expression when she opens her presents.

same here.....bride reads the card and holds up the gift - bridesmaids open, and write down who gave what......

I have never been to a shower where this has occured and never heard of it before. I had always heard that people like to watch the bride open them to see if she breaks any ribbon. They say it is an old wives' tale that for every ribbon you break you will have that many kids. I guess everyone has their own way of doing things though.

Same here. My bridal party was like an assembly line, but at the same time it didn't feel rushed and I acknoweledged every gift and person. I got so many compliments on how the whole gift part was handled. I opened plenty, but they just made it move that much quicker.

I went to a shower that had 130 guests. The bridal party opened the gifts and handed them to the bride in an aseembly line. I did not like it. But I guess if she had to open all the gifts it would take 4 hours.

This is standard practice I thought --
Its bad luck for the bride to use scissors or break some sort of packaging.

My family is Greek and I think they scared my FH's family with all the crazy superstitions 'Knives??? Quick get two pennies and hand them to the bride! Hurry!' ... 'An Apron, try it on and tie two knots immediately or we will be crushed by a meteor!'.... well sort of like that anyway.

Re: has anyone ever heard of this?

Ive seen this done at every shower many times they'll unwrap it but give the bride the box and she opens it, i didnt really care about the fact that the Bm's were unwrapping it, she still got the box and opened my gift.

ONE time they didnt do this and let me tell you i got annoyed, and not just me but everyone at the table. Bc she did it all herself the WHOOOOOOLEEE shower was just us sitting there watching her open her gifts and THATS IT!!!! no games, no mingling or anything...just ate our food, and watched gifts being open...If you have a smaller bridal shower then its ok and wont take long...Imagine 75-100 or more, it would take forever

Infact when i go to a shower and see bm's who have it unwrapped on time and ready to clean up all the mess right after, i say these BM's are right on point, one shower these girls did an amazing job and we all said how good they were

4 hours is exactly how long it took the bride to open gifts in my previous post

i tell everyone, that movie is not a comedy its a documentary! (but of course its hilarious) My FMIL actually brought a bundt cake with her on the plane from like 4 states over to my shower and my entire family was all 'she's doing this to be funny..... right?!?'
