OK for starters..I'm getting ready for the wedding at my parents' home. The Church is 5 blocks away and pretty much all of our family will be going to the Church especially since 99% of them live in Astoria.
So the other day, my mom mentioned that some of the family will be coming to our block the day of the wedding at around 1:40 ish (church is at 2) so they can 'watch me come out of the house.' I couldn't understand why they need to come and gather outside of my parents' home to watch me leave..especially when the ceremony starts at 2 and parking is a PITA by our Church. My mother thinks I'm crazy for not knowing this tradition of gathering outside the bride's home so you can watch her leave. She said that when the bride steps out of the house, it's a very BIG moment and cannot understand how I wasn't aware of this.
Am I really that wedding stupid or is my mom hanging on to some really old or non existent tradition?
TIA

I've never heard of that. Maybe it's something that's common in other parts of the country?

I have never heard of this but I know when my sis's got married, alot of the neighbors came out to see her but they weren't invited to the wedding so it wasn't all that strange. I am with you, I would feel a little awkward...lol

No, my mom is doing the same thing. There's going to be a CROWD on my block just to watch me hop into the partybus and be on my way.

never heard of it. It sound like one of those old traditions where the entire village walked the bride to the grooms village and 'gave her away'

I've never heard of it as a planned thing......but I know whenever people on my block growing up had a big event - wedding, prom, etc., we would also stand outside our houses and watch.
Good thing I'm getting ready at the hotel.....instead I'll have a bunch of strangers see me walking out

Oh my god this makes for a very funny visual but I have never heard of it!!! We always have seen the bride for the first time as she's walking down the aisle!!!

Re: Has anyone ever heard of this?
Well I have never heard of this either, but I am doing things a bit different.
Since my house will be filled with family, I am getting ready at the hotel, which is closest to my hall and away from my house and church. But my church is like a minute drive away from my house, sooooooo I will leave the hotel to head to my house to take a few pictures with the rest of the family and then leave to go to the church. So I know for sure my neighbors who have all seen me grow up, will be outside looking.
Talk about embarrassing...

I've heard of this before. In Spanish tradition, usually the mother will bathe AND dress the bride and will not let any one see her until she is ready. And afterwards, the neighbors all wait outside her home to see her depart on her journey.
