Has anyone ever quit a full time job without having another one lined up

Has anyone ever quit a full time job without having another one lined up

This is a fantasy of mine, but I think the stress & pressure from family to find a new job would be too much.

I was at a job for almost 6 years and was taken advantage of for way too long. I was going nuts, up all night streesing. A year ago I left for Labor Day and the whole next week I called in sick and on Friday I quit. The Friday that I left before Labor Day I sent my resume in to a company on Monster.com and I was hired on Tuesday...Thank God. Now I know this doesn't happen often and I had the same stress from family about money and another job, but my sanity was worth more. I saved up enough to cover me for a few months and left. I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown!!!!!! I'm still at that job now, stress free :)

tourist,
i happen to be the queen of doing this...
i am tempted to fall back into my old ways now...but i don't think it would be fair to my new husband...you know, i'm supposed to be a married/mature adult type...i can go being irresponsible like that anymore...but i know how you may feel...sometimes enough is enough already...you really have to weigh your options...and discuss it with DH...

yes - but at the time i lived at home with my parents. i would never do that now.

i remember the day...it was awesome. i worked at this place for 1 week (and it was in the WTC a year before 9/11 so maybe it was for the best) but anyway it was an awful job and on Friday, i got there, felt the tears coming on, packed up my desk, grabbed my coat and bag, told the office manager i quit and walked out. LOL.

ETA: every day i draft my resignation letter from my current job in my head!

How'd it work out for him?

I would not say I am taken advatage of, I'm just in such a rut, I can't even think about what I would like to do & I can't concetrate enough to get anything done here.

I know my boss did it before she came here, but she was living with her parents.

DH makes more $ than me, but I think it would be tight on just his salary. He said he'd look for freelance work ( he' a computer nerd)

Hmmm ... well, I fully supported he decision to quit ... he was absolutely miserable ... I knew he had to do it when I stayed at his house on his birthday to make special dinner and he came in, looking as if he had been crying, and went right to bed. We did not live together at the time, so he didn't have my financial support exactly because I had my own bills to pay.

He was out of work for a LONG time (while we were planning the wedding!). He took one job and quit a few months before the wedding. While we were on our HM, he got a call rom someone would used to work with, with a job offer and he started a month or so later.

both dh and i did last summer. right before our wedding we found an awesome deal on an apt in nyc, we had been live in dc. it was too good to pass up and we figured it'd be easier to find jobs once we moved anyway. it was a bit stressful b/c we had all the wedding stuff going on, plus moving and interviews, but it worked out for the best and two months after moving we both had jobs. though i've changed jobs already.

Tourist, i think about doing this EVERY day .. esp since I got back from my HM

I've never done it before in my life.. I always had another job lined up before I left my current one. But now I feel like as long as I'm still here, I will never truly focus on job hunting or finding what it is I really want to do. I will just put up with this , that is unless I just pick up and leave and give myself time to really explore my options.

The closest I got to quitting on the spot was when I had gotten rather sick about 2 months ago -- I was just so ill , had no idea what was wrong, had to take off time for docs appointments, etc. I had ran out of my paid time off, and they were not being cool about it. I was so frustrated, sick, and emotionally burnt that I was tempted to call my office and tell them I would be leaving, effective immediately.

DH and I have talked about this countless times and he totally supports my doing this if I choose to.. yet I also would feel like I was burdening him with all our expenses just to 'find myself' We'd scrape by temporarily, but I appreciate that he'd even be willing to let me do this.

Its truly a tough dilemma (sorry I didn't really contribute much to this thread, did I? )

Thanks. It is helpful knowing I am not the only one who feels this way. My brother did it. he was working in a drug store durign college, then worked full time till he foudn a 'real ' job, but he didn't have any luck, so worked at the drug dtore for a long time, and crazy hours, so eventually he quit to find a long time & was out of work for years!

He lives with our parents though.

I told DH last night I want to open a bridal shop ( yes I was watching the apprentice!) but I wouldn't know where to begin!

I guess you could say that I did that recently. My contract from the military was up and I wasn't planning on re-enlisting which would have paid me a $35,000 bonus for serving 4 more years, but I felt as though me going to the Middle East again and being away from my family and being in harm's way wasn't worth the money. I moved to NY where DH is from and he has supported me thus far. I attempted to find a job while I was still serving but it was hard with interviews and stuff. I did find a job when I first got here but was too difficult with school and the wedding I quit.

I recently starting searching for a job again now and I found one pretty quickly, the pay is not nearly what I was making while I was in but it will do for now. It's just tough with my school schedule and work, since school is my #1 priority. Good Luck if you do decide to do this. You will always have support in us here
