Has anyone had silver fillings changed to porcelain ones?
I'm just wondering if it hurts to have this done...I've been having a lot of work on my teeth lately and I'm not in the mood for any more discomfort or pain...

I had a friend that had this done a couple of years ago. I remember she said it didn't hurt but it was very $$$$$

You know...I hadn't even asked how much it was going to cost me because I just wanted it done...but now I'm having second thoughts...and maybe if I call the dentist tomorrow and find out the price, I'll be able to make up my mind.

OK so I spent the day having that done-- I had 3 silver fillings and my new dentist was going to file them down(?) but instead had to replace them so now I have a mouth full of white filling--- with the novacaine it didnt hurt anymore than a regular filling---they came out pretty easy-- FM me if you want more details--i was there for 3 hours they did 8 fillings in all---and the white are SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better Can't see them at all!!!
ETA I love the Milleridge!!!!

It doesnts hurt more than getting a regular filing. Although the amalgam is stronger than porcelain.

I just replaced five of them this month! It's just like having a cavity filled. Novacaine, drill the old filling out and put the new one in (resin fillings). Mine were broken (I think from age, grinding teeth, and clenching jaw) so insurance covered it.
I also read somewhere that the silver ones (amalgam fillings) can cause headaches and other problems because of the mercury in there. ANd they say that the white ones your teeth are less sensitive to hot and cold.
The cons are that they are more expensive because they take longer to put in (because he ahs to layer it in) and I think they may not last as long.

Debbie - i didnt know that...
hmm...that explains all my headahces - i seriously have the most fillings ever - i even have fillings on my wisdom tooth!! Most are amalgam. Only the ones closer to the front are porcelain.

I got mine changed over to porcelain... it didn't hurt at the time... you know because of the novacain and all... but i did notice some sensativity to hot and cold (even occasionally now and it's been about a 1 1/2 years)...
I also wasn't able to chew gum on the side that had the new fillings for about 6 months... I don't know if that's common... but i am definitely happy that I changed to the porcelain.
But definitely double check with the price... mine were covered by insurance.

Make sure your insurance covers porcelain fillings!!!!! Mine didn't, and I got stuck paying over $200 for them. I didn't even think to ask my insurance company before my dentist suggested that I get my amalgam fillings replaced (what a jerk - I'm never going to that dentist again.)
I also had some SERIOUS sensitivity problems. My teeth were killing me for oh, a couple of months. Anything hot or cold that touched those teeth gave me throbbing pain. It eventually died down thank goodness. That was not fun.

I'm the Queen of dental work. I have bridges and root canals and post and crowns, and an implant. While I was in getting all this work, I had 2 cracked old silver fillings, which were replaced in one visit, with novocaine and pain free. I love the way my teeth look now, so I am very happy with the porcelain. BTW, my insurance covered it.
