Cant I just set up the vases with water in an air conditioned garage or something? I just think.. When I get roses as a gift they last for DAYS without being refrigerated...

are you doing an outdoor wedding? maybe you can combine doing the flowers with another item such as fancy lanterns or something. Maybe storage for the flowers wont be so much... candles are also nice! just an idea.... hope it helps!

I don't think you are crazy at all.. One of my student's mother's is a florist and she recc I did it myself too when I told her how much they were charging to stuff some roses in a vase! I know arrangments take more time, I am just talking about bud vases where you just cut them and stick em in the water.
She told me to cut them the day before and leave a couple of leaves on them to help them open up. Originally I was going to do bud vases, but now I am not sure since I live out of town that may be a little hard! If you have somewhere to store them, I say go for it! Then everyone at the table to take a flower on their way out :)

I have a good friend who is a floral designer and she is helping me with centerpieces and stuff. She says that floral arrangements don't need to be refrigerated overnight. They need to be in lots of water and in a cool place is fine - like when FH sends you a bo-k just because!

I am all finding ways to save $ by doing things yourself- but I think you are going to have a lot of other things to be thinking about right before your wedding... Its just going to be an added stress for you. How about buying finding the vases discounted and having the florist fill them?

I know Sams club has awesome roses and thats all I want. Plain and simple LOL
They sell them in bulk... I think its 200 roses for $150!!!!!!! Im going to have about 10 table so thats 20 roses per table. Thats almost 2 dozen. If thats too much I could take out any that dont make it..
Im not concerned about time or anything because its at my FMILs house and she has a big air conditioned garage and were having a lot of people help now!! My sister, mom, his siter, mom, step mom and my 2 - 3 cousins at least.

I have thought of this a ton of times, especially after I saw the prices of bulk roses from Sams Club. When I told my mom, she thought I was crazy and basically said that I shouldn't expect her to help. You have to pick and choose what's worth arguing over, and this wasn't one of those things...so I'm not doing them myself!
If you have people willing to help, I totally say go for it! Think of how much money you are saving that you can use elsewhere!

Re: Has anyone here made their own floral centerpieces?
I thought of doing this for my friends shower and Im sooo glad I didnt. It wasnt anywhere near as crazy as the morning of my wedding and there is no way I could have done these. I just had way too many other things to take care of. (never mind how insane it would have been to do it for my wedding) If you buy flowers in bulk you have to strip them and let them sit in water for several days to get them open, then you have to arrange each one. Even if you dont need to fridge them, you still need a place to put them...and then you need to deliver them someway to the reception hall without destorying them on the way. Yes you may save money but its such a huge aggravation on the days before and morning of your wedding, I dont think its worth the trade off.
I think the only way it might be worth it is if you have a very small wedding and only need a few arrangements.
If you want to save money, maybe use candles or do a non flower centerpiece?
Edited to add: I had my friends shower done by Trina from Expressions Florist and her prices were almost the same as if I had bought the flowers / oasis / containers wholesale myself. not to mention all the time and effort she put into each one.

It's not crazy, but be sure that you have the time and assistance to do it. In order to make them look nice, you will have to spend time arranging them and pulling off damaged and wilting petals. I have to say from my own experience doing our e-party centerpieces, you really need to do them as close to the affair as possible. We did ours that morning. Also, bulk flowers are normally not expensive for a reason. They may not last very long if you do them too far ahead of time. It is a great idea if it is done right.
If this is something you are uncertain of, why not try to go for a candle centerpiece of some sort- you can definitely do them yourself and order either real or fake rose petals and rose tops (stems cut off) to decorate the base.

And just let me add that if you do decide to do this, PLEASE over order the flowers. When we did them, there were SO many flowers that were not presentable. You will be saving money this way for sure, so just spend a little extra to ensure you are not left with too few presentable roses.
