Has anyone just picked up and moved somewhere out of state?

We are seriously thinking of moving!!! I can't stand it here anymore!

Did you get jobs first or did at least one of you have a job first?

Where did you go? Do you still like it there?

Was it hard leaving family?

Did you know anyone where you were moving to?

Sorry for all the questions, we are just really getting serious about this now.

Thanks!

Hey Mandy..

I would also post this on the Home board...there are a lot of trasnplanted Nyers there.

DH & I are in the process of doing this right now. We are going to keep our NY jobs in the beginning, but we are staying close (Either western jersey or Connecticut.) DH knows that he can get a job relatively easily b/c he has a good reputation in his induatry & has connections throught the northeast, so I am not worried about him

Once we settle in & after a few months I would probably begin to look for work closer to where we decide tosettle down. Right now we are in the process of meeting with builders & looking for available land & weighing our options (build cots, local schools, crime rates, ers....both locations we are looking at are 75 - 90 minutes from midtown manhattan, so the travel is about the same.

It is not too hard for me to leave family b/c they are scattered all over the world, but he is having a bit of a hard time with it. It was his decision to move though...better living, cheaper houses, better communities, ****** plots of land...all that good stuff.

I do not know anyone where we are looking, but I will go to grad school once we settle & I am sure I will meet people there

I also wanted to add; we are getting a house that is big enough to accomodate 4 guest suites, as we are expecting people to visit pretty regularly.

Good luck...

I moved to London to be with DH!!! I didn't have a job before I left the states, but he had a good job to support us. I like it, but I'm very homesick... and it's been very hard on my family. I knew only his friends and family moving here (although there is one girl from NY now living here that a NY friend introduced me to via email)...I've been very slwo in making friends.

We moved 4 days after the wedding to Miami, our best friends live here.
First we asked his job if he could get a transfer and it was fine, then we came to look for an apartment in january to move in may. Then DH to be on the safe side, started looking for jobs online and even scheduled some interviews; Thank God because they never gave him the transfer!!! It took him a month to get a job and he got a better one It took me longer, about 2 months or more, but I'm working now, across the street from my apartment!
We love NY but it is too expensive! that was one of our main reason to move. We are very happy and very settled.
I miss my family a lot, I talk to my mom everyday but I'm happy, I wanted it to be just me and my husband!

DH picked up and moved, I moved down 9 months later (when I finished college). He knew one person here.
It is hard to be away from Family but we moved to Orlando so we always have people in the area who are going to disney.
I don't think I would ever move back to NY.
I don't know how people make ends meet there.

I moved to Virginia about 5 years ago - I had a job offer first. I don't really like it here (neither does DH) but we're stuck here for a while. I moved here because I needed a change....
It wasn't really hard leaving family because my sister lives an hour away, and my best friend lives here too. LI is only about a 5 hour drive so it's not like I'm too far from home.

we did it! DH got a job while we were vacationing with family down here in GA, went back to NY and gave our jobs 1 week notice! Packed all our stuff up on July 5th and started driving down on July 6th!!!!
We stayed with SIL for 1 month and got an apt.

we left NY for GA..DH sister lives down here with her husband and kids

DH got a job offer, I found one after moving

WE LOVE it here...it's cheaper, nicer weather, all around BETTER than NY

VERY hard leaving family and friends for me, dH is ok with it. He went away to college, I did not...this is a first for me.

Re: Has anyone just picked up and moved somewhere out of state?

i moved to md to go to grad school a few years ago. i hated it and my plan was always to come back to ny. i missed my family terribly, even moreso b/c i didn't know anyone in md. i eventually found a full-time job, made some friends there and made some friends at school. a year after i left dh moved down to start school at georgetown. and funnily enough in the three years we were there 3 of his high school friends moved to the neighborhood.

but anyway, after he graduated last summer we started looking into moving to manhattan which had been the plan. we managed to get a great deal on a really awesome sublet and so even though we didn't have jobs we took it and moved. we both found work within two months of moving. although i've already changed jobs.

i don't know if this helped at all. but if you think you'll be happier somewhere else go check it out. and i guess it depends on how close you are to your family how much you'll miss them. i'm really close to mine and i missed seeing my nieces and nephews. but for some people it's not as a big a deal. i know for dh he could care less if he was near his parents.

I've done it a ton of times, mostly pursuing education and/or job opportunities.

I haven't lived anywhere near my family for about 10 years, but I do not believe you have to live near your family in order to be 'close' to them. My mom and I are practically best friends and try to see each other several times a year. We talk A LOT on the phone and on IM.

Every time I've moved I have found it to be refreshing, rather than scary. I love exploring new cities, making new friends, starting new jobs, and just adding to my list of life experiences (I know it sounds cheesy!).

What part of GA did you move to? DH wants to move to Atlanta in the future. He moved there with his family when he was 15 and he loved it. I've only been there once and I HATED the humidity! I LIKE winter and the change of seasons. I don't know if I could live without snow or even a beach nearby
But, we have to think about the important things, like finding more affordable living and a good place for kids to grow up. Atlanta is much closer to DH's family too who are in Alabama (and they've already offered to do lots of babysitting!)

I did. DH lived in St. Louis so I was always looking for jobs out here. Once I got a job, I gave my two weeks notice and by the next week I had my stuff shipped and I moved.
All of DH's family are here and friends. I really miss my family and friends but I wouldn't trade being with him for anything.
I try and go home to visit every few months and my parents have been out here a few times. The standard of living is so much better than in NY and everybody is nicer.

Re: Has anyone just picked up and moved somewhere out of state?

I am moving next week to MD!

DH is from there. I lived there for 4 years and we moved back to NY a month before our wedding last year for his internship. It has been really hard living in new york - expensive, very tough to find a job, traffic. It took me 5 months to find my job and I hated it but stuck with it. An opening came up in my MD office and I took it so now we are going back. DH is job hunting and even though it's taking longer than we thought, it seems to be much less competitive than here.

I never thought I'd leave NY again but the pace of living is so much nicer in other parts of the country. I am going to miss my family like crazy but they will only be 5 hours away.

Good luck with your decision!

Actually, DH and I are starting to talk about leaving NYC. We'll see where the conversation goes.

Yes, I picked up and moved here, to NY to be w/ my FH in Astoria. I am orginally from MA. I am still trying to get used to that dam* train.

Actually, we just moved to California 2 1/2 weeks ago!!! DH had a great job opportunity that we couldn't pass up. Neither of us liked LI, even though we both grew up there.
It's a big adjustment though. DH also travels a lot with his job, he's in Vegas right now, and I don't have friends or family here, so it's a little lonely. I started to look for a job as soon as we knew we were definitely going to move. I got a job by interviewing over the phone. I think working makes it easier to adjust.
It's been working out well so far, I miss friends, but not LI. The weather is so beautiful here, though I will miss the snow. Everybody tells me that we can just drive 2 hrs and be in the snow in the mountains if we miss it though.

We moved to Ireland 1 month after the wedding. DH's job transferred him here for 18 months. It has been very difficult, and I am very homesick. I miss my family terribly!

Re: Has anyone just picked up and moved somewhere out of state?

A friend of FH and myself did this. He just decided that he hated being here and moved to Florida. From what I recall he went down for a week 1st and found a job, while he took a 'vacation' from his NY job. He came back a week later packed his stuff and was gone. He really did not know anyone down there but has met a few since. He was a little home sick at first but got over it. Now he loves it down there...Hurricanes and all...
