Has anyone taken...

Has anyone taken...

the GRE's? I think I might take them, I am still waiting to hear from two
other law schools but I really want to have a back up plan just in case I
don't get in to any of them. I don't want to waste another year w/o going
to school. I would just like to know how hard are they and how is it scored?
and does everyone have to take them to apply to graduate school or does
it depend on the program of study you choose? I would like to receive
my MA in political science/international relations. I am considering applying
to LIU C.W. Post campus. Thanks, I would appreciate any info

Re: Has anyone taken...

I took the GRE's to get into my MS program in 1999. It was still pen and paper back then, it was 6 hours of sheer hell. I won't lie. It was the SAT's all over again. I did not take any prep courses just borrowed a friend's prep book. I don't remember how exactly it was scored but I know I didn't do the best, good enough to get into the program though.

I hear that they are now computer based and you can do it in like 2 hours. BUT I think based on the answers to your first 5 questions (whether you get them right or wrong) determines what the rest of the test is like.

When I was thinking of applying to Doctoral programs I was thinking of taking the MAT's instead of the GRE's.

In either case.....GOOD LUCK!!!

I took the GREs in May. It is a computer based test now. For me...I thought it was pretty easy. I got almost a perfect math score and also did very well on verbal...but I am also good at standardized tests in general. When you register they will send you a cd-rom in the mail that has practice tests on it. I only did one the night before but it helped me understand the format of the test. You will do fine .

I took them too. I hated it. It was the longest test. Made the SAT look like a quiz
I would take it though..It is good for 4 or 7 years ...i forget

I took them in 1995 and I didn't think they were bad at all...but I also do well on standardized tests...

your scores expire after 5 years...so I am going to take them year again - as I am applying for a PhD program...

this is what I understand the new test is like:

the first question is a medium question...then if you answer it correctly it will give you a harder question until you get one wrong...if you get the question wrong then they give you an easier question...then they will guage what questions you got right and their difficulty level...so you are not able to go back to questions...you must answer the one in front of you....(there could be a way to skip but I am not sure)

I need to be in the 90th percentile for the progrm that I am applying for...so I have been doing a lot of studying...but no course...I'm pretty comfortable with how the test is set up, but really its b/c those classes are so expensive...however they probably know the types of questions that are asked over and over...and how to answer them (as a teacher I know exactly what will be 75% of the questions on the regents)

as for if you HAVE to take them...
* my first masters I did
* my 2nd - I didn't since I already had a Masters degree
* I transferred to another school for the 2nd masters and I didn't need them as long as my last 60 credits were above a 3.25

* my sister has a MFA (art) and did not need to take them at all...I guess - the portfolio had a bigger affect..

Re: Has anyone taken...

wow!! I don't do that well on standarized tests.
Please!!!!, I got a 150 out of a possible 180 on my LSATs. I don't really understand that thing about your score expiring, do you mean that if you plan on going for a second masters you might have to take them again? or for a Phd, they require this test as well? Yabbobay, two masters and a Phd soon, very smart lady I see!!!!!!!! I was wondering if you and Julz33 might wanna help me study, cause I will need all the help I can get
