Has anyone thought about doing their own flowers?

Has anyone thought about doing their own flowers?

So I went to the florist and I think the quote I got was somewhat reasonable. I was getting 700 roses for basically $2000. I thought it was decent until I found a few websites that deliver fresh flowers to florists. I would have to do all the work myself but I could get the roses at about 87 cents per rose which comes out to $609. I will still have to buy a few things but even if it costs $1000 I will be saving $1000. My FH and I are trying to save because we have pretty much accounted for over $20,000 and we are not including rings, bands, decorations, cake, favors and the list goes on. A few of my bridesmaids will be helping and I think we will be proud if we can pull it off. I am told we just need to have the flowers 3-4 days before so they have time to bloom.

Has anyone thought of doing this or should I just pay the money and get it done professionally? We could afford it but we would like to save. A few sites I have looked at are:

Here's what you need to think about....you will need to clean & cut each rose, then arrange them in a vase.If you leave all the leaves on they make the water yucky. I m not the best arranger...usually takes me a few tries when i buy them at the grocery store...so multiply this by 700..haha. You will need to buy all the vases. Then after you arrange all the roses you will need to deliver them to your location. Will you have the room for 15 (or however many tables you have) vases full of flowers in a car or van? Who will deliver them & set them up at your location? Many places don't let you get in until a few hours before hand. These are all things that you need to think about...do you want to be doing all this 3 days and the day of your wedding? When you hire a florist the cost isn't particularly in the flower itself but all of the other stuff involved...and their expertise in making it all look nice. i am not saying don't do it yourself...but i don't think people realize just how much is involved in it...i had a friend in Australia do her own so that is how i know! haha...good luck whatever you decide!

Check out Proflowers.com. They have a whole thing about wedding flowers. It sounds tricky, and you should def. not plan to do it yourself but have 2 good friends/family do it instead.
Good luck!

I dont think you are crazy for wanting to do it yourself, I would never do it b/c I dont want to have to deal with setting up and making sure they are the way I want them the day of. I would also be afraid that by some fluke they would die

My whole life is DIY but this isthe one time I am letting other people do things. I would buy one dozen now and see how it goes. THe last reply about delivery times is right. I know I have a thousand things to do that day, so I couldn't imagine. But I would test it first and see how it goes. Also did you get other quotes from other places?

My Bridesmaids offered to do it alone but I would like to be there and supervise. I figured it will be tricky but if we can pull it off it would be great. If we decide to do it and it works out I will post pics. Maybe we could end up giving someone some hope.

Have you also thought about storage?? Where would you be storing that amount of roses. They need to be kept in a dark place at a particular temperature. You also need to buy the supplies to cut them and arrange them. Not to mention how your hands might look. You need them nice for pics.

I too thought of DIY'ing but then passed on that thought quickly.

I am paying for the personal flowers and doing a flowerless CP to save $$$.

Consider everything before you dive in.

Best of luck in your decision.

Yep. I plan on doing my own. Only the boquets tho...and the boutineers(sp?)...not CP...My boks are going to be simple...just roses..nothing crazy..so I dont see why I cant do it. But it sounds like you are going to have ALOT of flowers...so you may want me to consider having it professionaly done...but if you can do it, and have help, then go for it. Def. do a test run..and see if yo ucan handle it..Good luck, and post pics!

if you think you can do it, i'd say go for it! if not, maybe you can do certain parts and have the florist do the rest, like only bo-ks or only centerpieces. or you can try doing a lot of the little things, like the throw away bo-k and buying petals wholesale. there's a lot of room for compromise.
