FH and I met with a vendor last week. They called us a few days later to tell us that someone else is coming in this week and is interested in booking them for OUR WEDDING DATE.... and they wanted to know if we wanted to come in before their appointment to book them. This seems a little fishy to me because, seriously, I cant see there being such a coincidence that someone else is going there a week after me and is getting married on the same date as me. I can see how vendors want business, but to blatently lie about someone else coming in just to get us to book, is pretty messed up..... if that is the case. It could be true, but I just dont believe it. Has this happened to any of you? If not, what would you think of it? Do you think they are being truthful? This is someone, mind you, that we wanted to book on the spot, but thought it would be best to shop around a little more.

I've only had this happen once BUT they told me when I booked the appointment that they had one person who they'd already met with that was interested in our date and another couple coming in a week later.

Ive gotten that too.. I think its just customary for them to do that just to see if you are really interested.

It happened to me. Someone wanted to book BYC for a bat mitzvah, so I went and put my deposit.
At least they called you. I know of some places that wouldn't.

It can be fishy but it can be true. If they have a good reputation already then I would say to just trust your instincts.

It can really go either way. When DH and I went to a showcase to see a band we were interested in they told me there was another bride there who had my wedding date and if I wanted the band I should act fast. I thought it was a selling tactic ad I wound up losing the band about 20 minutes later. Even this past week, we were looking to book a house for New Years weekend and the woman told me the house was available, but there were other people interested so she would book on a first come basis. I called the next day to book the house and it was gone. The bottom line is, if you want the vendor, go ahead and book before it's too late. If your on the fence, don't rush your decision- you don't want to regret it and there are always more vendors out there.

Re: Has this happened to you...
I've encountered this but in a slightly different form. For me, most of the vendors who used this tactic told me someone else was interested in my date while I was meeting with them (so I would feel pressure to book on the spot) and this supposed person was 'coming in right after me' or the next day. I never got a phone call prior to the meeting. So, it might be true. The way I would have seen it though was well, if they book you, then it wasn't meant to be for me!

Re: Has this happened to you...
Be careful, but it is possible. I was calling around about 4 months ago to book my engagement party and this one place told me the price and what not for the date I was looking for. I hung up, called FH and then called back the place. In that 5 minutes, someone else came in and booked the room. I didn't believe it, so I had my brother call the next day, and sure enough, it was booked. I was still skeptical (even though I booked another place) I called them about 2 months later, and they were still booked.
Be careful and Good Luck

Re: Has this happened to you...
I agree it cand definitly go either way. BUT the part that seems a little fishy to me.. and this is JMHO is that why would they call you and tell you that after already making the appt. with the other couple?? Fine it was nice of them to let you know, but what would have happened if you did run down and leave a deposit. The other couple would come in for the appt. and they would say sorry someone just booked your date??? that dosent sit right with me. Its bad business and if I was the other bride I would be really ticked off that I just wasted my time.

I had this happen once. FH and I were turned off by it and did not go with the vendor.

Re: Has this happened to you...
This has happened to me- For the time you are getting married, it may be very possible.. so you really can't tell if they are just saying that- which is insane. My date is in the winter on a friday, so I felt that they were totally bs'ing. I hate when vendors make you feel like you are being backed into a corner.
