My wedding is not until June 2011. Since it is over 2 years away, I was thinking of having an engagement party since it is infact so far away. I am getting all of this criticism & can't take it..1st I was told that it looks like we're asking for money!..then I was told that its going to cost alot of money & we should just put it towards the wedding..my whole thing is why can I go to everyone else's give a gift & be fine with it but I am not supposed to have one?? Im so aggravated! HELP! haha

In my opinion having an engagement party, especially when your wedding date is a good amount of time away, is perfectly fine! It gives you a day to celebrate and you don't have to do spend a lot on it. You can still put together a nice party and not drop a ton of $$$.

Defintely have an E-party Your day is far enough in advance that people will not feel like its on top of eachother
I had one, and it was the best time, i do not regret it at all!

I think people are ALWAYS going to criticize!!!!!! you should do what makes you happy!!!! its a celebration not a money grubbing event!!!!!!!

my wedding is in 2011 too ... my fh has a huge back yard so in the summer we are gona get catered food or maybe even bbq and have a small family engagement party in the backyard.

we just had one and i got engaged in april 2008, wedding is in june 2010.... it broke up the waiting a bit LOL and our families got to meet which was nice

I say go for it even if you can't do something really big then opt for a smaller gathering like a BBQ or just a regular house party.

I'm not getting married for another 2 years also which is why I want an engagement party even more! It's a great way to celebrate with family and friends...you can't listen to what anyone else thinks! You have to do what YOU and your FIANCE want! Throughout the wedding process I'm sure there will be many people who put their opinions in and want things a certain way, but in the end it's you and your fiance's day and you have to follow your heart.
And if people are saying that all you want is more gifts, then simple put on the bottom of the invitation 'No Gifts Please' and that should take care of that!

My future mother in law wants to throw us a engagement party in the summer, but we got engaged last march. I feel like people will think that now its just for the gifts/money a year later, should I tell my FMIL to just forget it?

You wedding is in June, maybe you could have the E party in June around your date and try to make it a 2 year away thing? Then you could have a backyard BBQ and it wouldn't be that expensive. And if you or someone has a pool, you've got built in entertainment!

i think the whole point of an eparty is to celebrate your engagement!!! not wait 10 years and then do it, you get engaged and then have an eparty! most dont even decide on a date until after their eparty... i didnt have anything formal but we had a dinner party for about 20 and that was 2 weeks after our engagement and we hadnt even come close to setting a date but people came, with gifts! thats the whole point, people lose site of everything
eta: who cares what others say, if they dont want to give a gift because your wedding is 2 years away (which is a stupid reasonnot to) then they dont have to come! simple as that

we got engaged sept 6 and had our e party nov 9... ( would of been in oct ) but the hall was booked and my moh was in mexico lol... but we had one just bridal party and our family and it was aswome it was a good way to get both families under 1 roof... we kept it lost cost and had and aswome time... fm me if you need any help or ideas!!

I say DO IT. I was offered an e-party from my FILs and out of pride and stubborness, I said no way. I dont feel right asking people for money. This was back in 2007.
Fast forward to 2009, I am pinching every effin penny I have to pay for this god foresaken wedding. If I could go BACK in time, I would do it. I know people who were in much better financial situations that we were and STILL had eparties. I was too proud to do it though...

definitely have one! there are so many things you can diy to cut back on costs, and you have so much time that it should not wipe out your wedding fund. we had ours oct 21st 2007, and are getting married oct4th2009. it was amazing!
