i am seriously contemplating drafting a letter and placing it in mailboxes in our desired neighborhoods in hopes of finding a homeowner that is planning on selling in the near future.
is this a good idea or should i check myself into the insane asylum?

I have gotten them in my mailbox. I always giggle when I get them because I am not planning on moving ever but hey - maybe they work.....

Might work. But if I got one of these letters and I was even THINKING about selling... I would call back and offer a very inflated price.
I would look at these letters as being from a desperate to buy buyer. But hey you never know I suppose.

I actually find it really annoying when people drive through the neighborhood all slow looking for someone to talk to about the houses in the area.
I think it would irk me to find something in my mailbox.

I AM a desperate buyer. i see your points though. if i was a homeowner, i think i would be annoyed as well.

We get letters often and I can't say it ever annoyed me. In fact, I always felt flattered.
I've also seen people put up posters/signs in local shops stating that they were looking for a home in a specific neighborhood.
