Having problems with my mother & her dress.

Hi ladies.... I need help. MY mother refuses to go looking for a dress for the wedding until she loses some weight... But you really can't do that when you are sitting there eating all kinds of fried foods & having dessert after dessert....

any help or advice please?!!!!!

Hi, How long do you have to your wedding? Is your mother possibly waiting a while knowing that she will put the weight back on if it is too far off? If it is within 3-4 months, maybe put a picture of you and her together on the refrigerator. Remind her that many more pictures of the 2 of you will be taken soon. Believe me she will get the hint! Something you have to look forward to (LOL) after 'your changes' is weight gain and it is very hard to take it off. In 10 weeks I have only lost 3 1/2 lbs. And Julianne's wedding is 4/12. Good luck and tell me if my ideas works. A

Well forget how she may or may not be eating.

My mom was insane until she found her dress.
So, even though she still wanted to lose weight I made her go.
We went to Sugar Plum, which is were I had gotten my sweet 16, junior prom, senior prom, Air Force ball dresses and whatnot and went to the lady that new my mom well, her name is jeri. Jeri took my mom under her wing and found her an amazing dress.
We both explained to her that if she lost, she lost weight and we would alter it. But that she needed the piece of mind of having one so that I could deal with her being 'sane' and not the crazy mom of the bride who doesn't have a dress.. and another thing which people laugh at me for saying... but my mom is overweight but you know what she has is an awesome mom and got that way because she took care of us amazingly and not herself which I can't fault her for it, and she did lose alot of weight once when we were younger but her gallbladder acted up and she gained alot back. She is a bigger lady, but you know what she is my mom and if she suddenlly dropped a bunch of weight for the wedding she wouldn't look like my mom and if she was to gain it back it would look silly.
So, have your mom's makeup and hair done if needed get her a corset and make sure you take her to get the dress she wants.
Mine complained for months that she wished she could get a dress she loved but she couldn't because she was overweight.. but you know what she found the dress (didn't love it at first site) but we all thought she looked awesome, and she said it was super comfy after the wedding and got a ton of complements!

Ok, I'll attach a picture and you can judge for yourself.

Hey - my mom wouldn't seriously look for the same reason (she also works a lot and has very little free time and was moving on top of it). Then, the pressure set in and she went one day and bought two (one for my brother's in August and my mine in October). She bought them both in July. Then she didn't go for a fitting until the Sunday before my wedding. We had to sit and wait while they altered her dress on the spot. We were really lucky the bridal shop did that for her.

For me, my mom had to ready or else she would have been so insecure she wouldn't have liked anything anyway.

If you aren't getting married until September of next year, you have plenty of time. Mother dresses typically take 6 months and less.

My mother bought her gown off the rack in lord and taylors about 3 months before the wedding. She took it to the local dry cleaners to be altered and everything was fine.

I think your mom has plenty of time to start looking, like the other responses 6 months is about an average lead time for MOB gowns.

And if you can get her out shopping early, tell her it would be realtively simple to alter the dress if she loses weight.

I wouldn't worry about it. She has time. My MIL found her dress about 2 months before the wedding. I wouldn't recommend waiting that long though. She got lucky that they had her size and didn't have to do much alterations.
