Hawaii HM

alright ladies! I think i have convinced FH to do Hawaii for our honeymoon! What do you girls think the most painless way to do this is?

Should we fly straight to hawaii (like 11 hours) orrrr make a stop in Vegas on the way for like 2 days?

ORRR should we stop in vegas on the way home for 2 days?

He hates flying and I dont wanna torture him too much with the flight LOL

what would you do?

:)

DH and I flew directly to Hawaii from newark airport .... we did a cruise there so that we would be able to see all the islands without inter-island flights.

(we don't like flying either)

We also flew direct from Newark. They offer 1 direct flight a day on Contential. We got a great deal it was $1250 roundtrip for both of us, which is pretty good.

We went for 10 days and went to Honolulu, Maui and Kona. We always say if we could do it all over, we would only go to Maui, it just has the best of both worlds; plenty of activities and relaxation.

i agree - Maui was our favorite, followed by Kauai. We did not like Oahu at all.

DH and I took a flight that had a 1 hour layover in Cali. Let me tell you though, it was a rough flight for me. We got married Friday, Packed Sat night till sunday am and got 2 hours of sleep before going on the plane. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fall asleep on the plane which made the ride worse.

If I did it again, and if I could afford it I would have stayed overnight or 2 days in LA or San Fran to break up the flight.

If your FH isn't a fan of flying I would take that into account when deciding on how many islands to visit. DH and I went to Oahu for 2 nights and then flew to Maui and stayed there for the remainder of our time there. The plane from Oahu to Maui was a 32 seater which I was fine with. DH gets motion sickness and didn't have a good flight lol.

Just food for thought.

Im assuming you did the NCL Pride of America or whatever its called?? Did you enjoy the cruise itself ??? Asking because I hear a lot of negative reviews on that cruise grrrrrrr
I was also thinking of doing that!

no - DH and I refuse to go on norwegian - we've been on an NCL cruise once and the food was awful and there was ZERO entertainment on the ship other than the shows.

We actually did a 12 day Carnival cruise leaving from Vancouver Canada. It was 6 days at sea (which was really nice ... plus, Carnival had entertainment on the ship during the day) followed by 7 days on the islands. We really liked it and would totally do it again.

Oh, as for why we didn't like Oahu, i guess it's just too developed - we were hoping for coconuts and palm trees everywhere and oahu is more like a city (though very small city compared to NY lol). On oahu, we had 2 days - we spent the first day hiking up Diamond Head (which takes about an hour or two round trip and is VERY tiring) followed by relaxing in teh hotel. The second day we walked around the beach and whatnot. Then we got very bored and ended up going to a mall

We didn't like Oahu or Kona. Oahu is very commerical, honestly I felt like I could have been in Cali or Florida. Our purpose of going there was to see Pearl Harbor but it was sold out! Kona is nice but its the least developed and really nothing to do. We stayed at an amazing resort but nothing to do except lay by the pool, which I'm fine with but after three days, I get antsy.

Can't say about Pearl Harbor because DH and I didn't go (nor did we really care to go) but here's my take on Diamond Head:

It's nice but it's a tough hike. We were there at the end of Sept and it was really hot - so hot that one girl was *this* close to passing out while climbing. It's about an hour or two round-trip. When you get to the very top, it's REALLY crowded and there's not too much to do other than climb back down (the same path you used to go up). I'm glad DH and I got to do it, but if we didn't go, i would have been just as happy.

pics from Diamond Head:

OMG i'm an idiot ... just remembered that in Oahu, we also went on a Lost tour (the tv show). It was filmed there so it was cool to see some props and scenes and whatnot.

I just want to say I went to Oahu and really liked it. It isn't as honeymoon-ish (and is built up), but I liked going to Pearl Harbor and doing Diamondhead. The view from Diamondhead is AMAZINGGG. I'd suggest renting a car and just checking out the sites. I also had Matsumoto shave ice while there (it's famous) and looved it. We did lots of hiking while there and went on a whale tour.

I wouldn't stay more than a day or two on your honeymoon before skipping off to the more romantic spots, but there are nice things to see if you do go. I'm at work now, but I can post pictures later if you are interested.

HTH! And feel free to FM me if you have any questions!

Re: Hawaii HM

We recently returned from MAUI for 2 weeks!! We chose to chill out and spend the entire 2 weeks there...one week in Kapalua at the Ritz (northwest part of the island) and one week in Wailea (south shore). WE HAD A FREAKIN BLAST!!!

Here is my opinion.....rally through the flight (we did Newark to Pheonix had a 1 hour layover) and then right into Maui...it's about 4.5 hours each leg.....the short layover was enough for us to stretch, have a quick nasty airport bite and then continue on......I HIGHLY REC spending EVERY MOMENT YOU HAVE in the Hawaiian islands...it is paradise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
