Hawaii Honeymooners-

What kind of clothing did you bring with you?

I want togo shopping and don't know what to get. Some clothing for daily activites and some dress clothes for the night time... but how many dressy outfits will we need. I'm clueless

Hi!

I'm from Hawaii (live in NY now). It's VERY casual there. Whenever I'm home for a visit, my Mom always comments that I'm over-dressed when I'm just wearing what any NYer would on the weekend in Manhattan -- khakis and a nice top, even a cute summery casual dress.

I usually bring one nice outfit because we'll always go somewhere nice, but remember it's still casual so don't even bother to bring a cocktail dress -- I guarantee you won't wear it. People in Hawaii wear lots of color, a NYer in black will stick out. ;)

Bring comfortable clothes it'll likely be in the mid-80's (it's the same all year round). It's good to have a sweater, too, because sometimes in the evening it get a bit chilly with the ocean breezes -- of course, chilly is a relative term...! Rubber slippers (aka flip flops here on the East Coast) are considered 'national footwear' everyone wears them. Aloha attire (aka Hawaiian shirts/dresses) is the daily style. For dressing up, men will wear a nice Aloha shirt and khakis, ladies wear just about anything, not necessarily Aloha attire, but definitely cool and comfy.

Have a great time!

P.S. -- if you're visiting the Big Island and plan to go to the Volcano, or if you're going to Maui and will be visiting Haleakala, bring a WARM jacket. It can be VERY cold, rainy, and windy up in the mountains -- there's is snow in Hawaii, you'll see it on Mauna Kea on the Big Island. You'll probably hit the beach later the same day, but you wouldn't want to be freezing while you're in the mountains.

:)

For the day, I brought shorts and tanks and bath suits - was fine for everywhere. Bring good sneakers you don't mind getting dirty esp if you like to hike. In Maui, we did the Mt. Halekelea (sp?) and it could get chilly up there - we didn't go at sunrise more later morning and I was ok with shorts, tee shirt and a hooded sweatshirt but I hear it is much colder at other times.

In the evening, I mostly wore skirt outfits - cute skirts or capris with tanks/pretty shirts for dinners with nice sandals. I never went extremely casual and or extremely dressy and was fine everywhere. I wore my nicer outfits at fancier restaurants. I never felt like a stand out NY'er - I wore what I typically wear out here in NY. There are some very casual places and there are some nicer places. Like I wouldn't have worn shorts or something extremely casual to Spago in the 4 Seasons but would be fine with that at a local place off of a resort (even though I never did that). DH could pretty much wear three button shirts or short sleeved button downs with khacki shorts or khacki pants any places we went. Hawaiian shirts are permitted everywhere! You may want a light sweater for air conditioning in some places...I brought one but barely used it....

Nicey is right- we just got back and it was very casual. During the day, I was almost always in shorts, tanks, bathing suits, and flip flops. For dinners, I wore summer skirts/ dresses or capris and my husband wore khaki shorts with nice short sleeved shirts (either t's or collared shirts) every night to dinner. One night he wore khaki pants but no other pants. We both brought jeans and neither of us even touched them.

We did the Haleakala sunrise trip and it's freezing. It's totally worth it and I highly recommend doing it but bring warm clothes. I wore shorts & a tank as my first layer then I had on a wool sweater and sweat pants on top of it. if you go with a bike company, they will give you warm wind pants and a wind jacket & gloves so you can wear that over your clothes. If you are going up on your own, bring a jacket or blankets from the hotel.

If you really want to get new stuff, get a cute little sundress or cute bathing suit coverups.

Have fun! Hawaii is amazing!

If you're going up to Haleakala Volcano to see the sun rise, bring pants, a warm sweater, possibly gloves and a hat or soemthing to keep your head warm. It was really chilly up there and we went in the beginning of May.

Of course driving down it gets warmer and the sun is up by then too. We wore jeans but some people brought shorts for the drive down.
