Re: Hawaii Tips
I went on my HM to Kauai, and to Maui a few years ago, with a quick stop over in Oahu.
My taste in travel is a little different than some people so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Maui is a lot of fun, with amazing food. I especially loved the area called upcountry on the slope of Haleakala. I would stay on the south shore in Wailea, I thought the 4 seasons looked really nice for a HM. I did not like the Grand spa at all. I really loved loved loved spending the night at Hotel Hana-Maui, maybe my favorite hotel ever. Most people drive to Hana and back in one day....I was so glad we stayed there! The north west coast is also really really pretty. The main resort area on the west coast is nice, but kinda looked like California in the 70's to me. Lahina is really really touristy, but does have a lot of art galleries, and is more of a real town.
Kauai has the most beautiful scenery, but it wasn't as much fun as Maui...the restaurants and shopping were nothing impressive....but mother nature did an amazing job. I was very happy I stayed on the north coast in Hanalei. Nearly everyone else on LIW stayed on the south shore at the Hyatt. The hotel is beautiful, but I was not so impressed with the Poipu area......compared to Maui it just seemed a bit drab, and the beach was underwhelming. Overall, I didn't feel the Aloha spirit on Kauai as much as on Maui, but it is less developed. I also have to say, Hanalei really has a nice traditional Hawaiian look with the architecture something that is hard to find. We stayed at the Hanalei colony resort, we loved our room, it was enormous and perfect, for not a lot of money. It is however a condo development that caters to a much older crowd, and doesn't have much in the way of food nearby.
As for my quick stop in Oahu....Honululu was really drab and depressing....I didn't get to Waikiki though.
